I see all these people competing on TV getting nose jobs for rewards, and for the most part they look decent.
What I want to know is, does the feeling ever come back in their nose after surgery?
I'm asking this because when I had orthodontic jaw surgery the nerves where they cut into the muscle and skin were killed. It's kinda annoying and will be there the rest of my life.
Does anyone know anyone with a nose job that can testify whether everything went back to normal or whether there was any lingering effects? 5/17/2011 11:24:26 PM |

If your surgeon is skilled enough, they should be able to salvage a lot of the feeling. Now, if it's an area that has a ton of nerve endings (i.e., a penis or clitoris) it's obviously going to be a little more difficult. I would think your nose would be pretty easy though considering I think most rhinoplasties involve just fixing the bone versus cutting into the skin... 5/17/2011 11:29:35 PM |

How do they get to the bone without going through skin from the inside or outside? 5/17/2011 11:33:56 PM |

From the surgeries I've seen, they take this thing that looks like an ice pick and jam it up in there then chip pieces off and shape what bone the way you want it (I know it's more technical than that, but it's the best way I can describe it).
But a lot of surgeries now don't require huge incisions (sometimes no incision) at all. Ahhh, science.

I think that it just depends on the type of surgery, the severity of nerve damage, and the body's ability to heal.
My husband and son have both had multiple surgeries on their noses and upper lips because of a cleft lip. The scar tissue and area surrounding it is extremely sensitive to touch.
While its a different type of surgery, I lost all sensation in the skin surrounding my C-section scar for at least a year or two. It's only recently (3 1/2 years later) that I have noticed that feeling has returned to the area. 5/17/2011 11:44:13 PM |

^ Good point.. I was mainly thinking of nose jobs people get out of self esteem or personal looks, but I didn't consider more intense surgeries like cleft lips and palates. 5/18/2011 12:06:14 AM |

I've had three surgeries on my nose, two were from injuries, one was a rhinoplasty that completely restructured my nose.
I have complete sense of smell and feeling in my nose. I really like my nose now, haven't had any work done on it in 10 years. I'm quite happy never to have it done again. (the last one was a bitch, I couldn't taste or hear well for like weeks afterwards) but all good now.5/18/2011 12:57:31 PM |
