I can say athletics now since basketball might be a contender...

(No matter how bad their football has been for 3 years the football thread would have been made.)

Brady Hoke is here, and Michigan Football is back. Might still be 6 or 7 wins but... at least it's Michigan again. He is recruiting really well too, starting in the trenches.

Now...

The Michigan throwback uniforms to be worn for the first ever BIG HOUSE night game against Notre Dame...

I'm surprised Michigan stooped to doing something like this. It's fun yes, but Michigan I thought would have more class and pride about their standard Maize n Blue and winged helmet.

Leave it to the fine folks in Ann Arbor to fuck with the best uniforms in college football.

Those look like some Russell or Champion knock off that they'd sell in the campus bookstore, not something they'd actually wear in a game.

I wasn't talking shit. I was implying that the level of success that Michigan fans should expect is NOT 6-7 wins, but more like 9-10. As I've said before, I hope UM does well and gets back to winning 9-10 games every year.

yea i hear ya... well if rich rod stayed it still would have been 6-7 wins with that ... well i guess he called it defense...

so... Hoke will get 6 or 7 this year himself and since it basically had to be a 6-7 win ceiling with either coach/scheme... im glad its gonna be MICHIGAN FOOTBALL

if denard robinson could win 7 by himself last season, I think 8 is attainable by having a diciplined coach

if we beat sparty and osu....2 teams that I have us losing to....then what does your breakdown look like? that would then leave us with 9 wins

we lose multiple crappy games at the big house? to indiana at the? western mich? SD ST? Minnesota?

ssly its more of a statement about how easy our sched will be this year

I'll go with

Sat., Sep. 3 vs. Western Michigan Ann Arbor, Mich. TBA W
Sat., Sep. 10 vs. Notre Dame Ann Arbor, Mich. 8:00 p.m. ET L
Sat., Sep. 17 vs. Eastern Michigan Ann Arbor, Mich. TBA W
Sat., Sep. 24 vs. San Diego State Ann Arbor, Mich. TBA W
Sat., Oct. 1 vs. Minnesota * Ann Arbor, Mich. TBA W
Sat., Oct. 8 at Northwestern * Evanston, Ill. 6:00 p.m. L
Sat., Oct. 15 at Michigan State * East Lansing, Mich. TBA L
Sat., Oct. 29 vs. Purdue (Homecoming) * Ann Arbor, Mich. 12:00 p.m. ET W
Sat., Nov. 5 at Iowa * Iowa City, Iowa TBA L
Sat., Nov. 12 at Illinois * Champaign, Ill. TBA W
Sat., Nov. 19 vs. Nebraska * Ann Arbor, Mich. TBA L
Sat., Nov. 26 vs. Ohio State * Ann Arbor, Mich. TBA W

UM will probably lose to either Illinois or Northwestern this year... but hard to choose between them.

Can't see Big Blue winning in East Lansing, but who knows?

Hopefully I'll get up there for the ND & OSU games.

GO BLUE

now that THE Obviously Scandel-prone University has distractions and humps to climb they will end up the underdog somehow and come in and destroy the Wolverine faithful's hearts

oh come on, you gotta come up with a better nickname than that

and if they played each other earlier in the season, then it might be a bigger problem dealing with distractions. Hopefully they wont linger until the last game of the season

I'm interested to see how Hoke will do with his (from my understanding) desire to play a more conventional power game while using the lollipop guild that DickRod recruited.

maybe a different nickname is due here.

tough question. IMO, any big10 game is a potential loss. i would say that directional michigans are sure wins, but this is michigan, who loses to app state at home, so it's all up for grabs. i can't imagine they'll win more than 6 games though.

i could be wrong, but i can say w/ absolute certainty that 8 wins is not a worst case scenario, as has been previously been stated.

Here's this week's mailbag:

From @JohnTCpsu: What happens to the Big Ten race now? It appears wide open.

You're right. It has gotten more wide open in the fallout of the Ohio State scandal, where you have a bunch of key starters suspended for five games and significant questions about whether one of those guys, QB Terrelle Pryor, will play at all for the Buckeyes this year. Not to mention the fact that Jim Tressel is gone, and the impact his departure will have on the team's overall management and preparation, not just on Saturdays but on a day-to-day basis.

Still, I'm not counting out the Ohio State Buckeyes just yet. This is a very talented collection of players and the program has won six Big Ten titles in a row. However, the door is certainly open.

I'm going to stick with my pick from a few months ago: the Nebraska Cornhuskers. They have some studs to lead the D, and Bo Pelini has one of the sharpest defensive systems in college football. Dangerous quarterback Taylor Martinez is healthy again. They have a good stable of backs led by Rex Burkhead, and I like the move of making Tim Beck offensive coordinator as a replacement for Shawn Watson. That should perk up the offense. Better still, the Huskers face most of their toughest opponents in Lincoln: Ohio State, Michigan State, Northwestern and Iowa. There are three sizable road games: against the Wisconsin Badgers (the week before playing the Buckeyes), at Penn State and at Michigan.

I give Nebraska the edge in the Legends Division, in which everyone except Minnesota should be at least a borderline Top 25 team this fall:

Michigan will be much improved with more seasoning and the addition of new defensive coordinator Greg Mattison. Expect at least eight wins.

Northwestern, which returns the vastly underrated Dan Persa at QB, could crack the Top 25 if it can find a little more juice in the running game.

Iowa, which lost probably as many key guys as anyone in the league, should get out to a 4-0 start before visiting Penn State. I doubt it will open any worse than 6-2 before closing with the two Michigan schools, Purdue and Nebraska, but I am skeptical that it'll have enough to overtake the Huskers. The next-best team in Legends will be Michigan State, led by QB Kirk Cousins, RB Edwin Baker and an imposing defensive line. However, I don't see MSU surviving a schedule that includes road games at OSU, Nebraska, Iowa and Northwestern.

As for the Leaders side, which isn't as deep, I had previously expected OSU to win it. But this is where things have gotten interesting. Penn State should surprise some people. Insiders expect them to be more physical, but as I wrote weeks ago, they must have one quarterback establish himself to unite the team. And it needs to happen by early October when they get a visit from the Iowa Hawkeyes. Their final five games are rough: at Northwestern, Illinois, Nebraska and then at OSU and at Wisconsin. That's too brutal a stretch for me to go with Penn State.

Wisconsin -- which, like Iowa, lost a ton of key players, including a very good QB -- has some terrific running backs and some good players on D, but I suspect it might drop off from last year to something like an 8-4 season.

The dark horse to come out of the Leaders: the Illinois Fighting Illini. They have an impressive young front man (I initially wrote "leader" until I realized the pun) in Nathan Scheelhaase, who made big strides as his freshman season wore on in 2010. Ron Zook is very high on the maturation of running back Jason Ford to make up for the loss of Mikel Leshoure.

Zook also couldn't ask for a better league schedule, as his team will only play four road games. Three (Indiana, Purdue and Minnesota) are against the three worst teams in the conference. The other is at Penn State. The Illini also avoid Nebraska and Iowa, two of the most physical teams in the Big Ten. If there is a team that can sneak past OSU in the Leaders division, it's Illinois. But I'll stick with the Buckeyes to face Nebraska again, and stay with the Huskers emerging as the Big Ten champs.
