i don't think anybody is claiming that. nobody's condoning stealing from others. it's not that black and white, man.

i'm saying this "once you're a heroin addict, your life is over" nonsense needs to stop.

i think if this chick actually wanted to get help, she could. i'm not so convinced she wants help.

but who cares what i think. i don't even know the chick.

If she's been off of it for 10 years (congrats to her) but still goes to treatment, she hasn't "beaten" it, she's just found a successful way to maintain control over her addiction. If she felt it didn't have a hold over her still, why would she continue going to meetings?"

I'm guessing that is what the doctor meant when he was speaking to the class.

i don't think anyone is claiming that either. they're just saying there's a lot of variables, and it's far from easy to beat a serious addiction, especially when there are pre-existing mental issues (which is often the case). and from what i gather, this chick isn't a heroine addict, but i don't know.

So they're basically saying the same thing I am, only different

Gotcha.

Anyway, good luck to her. The road to recovery is paved with assholes who will mock her and hope bad things happen to her. Sucks, but that's life. [/the end]

I am in no way condoning the behavior. We need to have a better treatment/punishment system set up for addicts. Unfortunately the stats show that an extreme number of all male convicts tested positive for at least one drug. So how to you distinguish between the two? Like hard addicts versus the casual/occasional user?

Addicts need to be punished for the crimes they commit and they need serious help to fight addiction. which is a disease. I can quote shit all day from reputable sources to back that up. People need to accept it.

Nobody is saying they should get a pass. Some here are taking personal perspective and experiences and twisting the intent of the post.

I get what you're saying gunzz, but I don't think there is any real way to stop people from using drugs or becoming drug addicts. There is a percentage of people who are predisposed to addiction from the day they are born, but there are wayyyyy more people that willfully abuse drugs to the point that they become addicts. I have more sympathy for the former group than the latter. Unfortunately, people from the latter group are usually the first ones to proclaim they have a disease that they can't control to justify their shitty behavior. Not everyone who uses/abuses drugs becomes an addict. In fact, for some genetic makeups, it's incredibly rare. It's easier to label a pattern of shitty choices and behaviors as a 'disease' than to admit that you really don't want to stop getting high.

Do you see where I'm coming from when I say that it's self inflicted?

I'm an alcoholic/ Addict. I've been to treatment multiple times, in and out of AA/NA. I've done plenty of fucked up shit in my pursuit of being messed up. Some things which are simply unforgivable. I admit what I have done is my fault and no one else's. I've been an incredibly shitty person to my friends and to my family- drugs and drinking took over my life and changed everything for me, and those around me. And I feel terrible about the things I've done.

With that said, there is hope, but I think that it comes down to being so sick and tired of doing this shit for so long, hitting bottom, and then hitting another, and another- I had to choose it for myself. That I was going to stop using no matter what, and not just say fuck it when things got hard again. It helps having support from certain groups but I don't go to meetings anymore. I just woke up one day and realized enough was enough, and I can't keep putting myself and others through the same BS over and over again. Things get better, slowly but surely. I'm doing it one day at a time.

If there's any of you out there who I fucked over, or pissed off, or whatever, shoot me a pm and I'll do my best to make it right. If you're struggling and want to talk, do the same.

Basically, my whole take on drug addiction after living with somebody that was an addict is that it is really easy to slip into it if you are given the perfect conditions for it. Once you get caught in it you are stuck. And yes, it pretty much means that you are going to turn into an unbearable person.

Don't do heroin if you're a bitch. I know quite a few people who have done it for a while and turned out just fine decent. Its like anything else. Its not the activity its your outlook and mentality. This applies to pills, beer, whatever.

no, hes pretty much right

nicotine is as addictive as heroin as a mood & behavior altering agent and roughly only 10% of nicotine addicts kick the habit completely

sorry, but the withdrawals from quitting smoking are nowhere near as severe as heroin

and i also doubt that the buzz from a cigarette comes anywhere near to the high that heroin induces

I used to be a 1-1.5 pack a day smoker. no, it wasn't easy to quit, but if you have will power and you WANT to quit, you can do it.

I think it's a little insulting to heroin addicts to suggest that kicking the habit is easier than quitting smoking

ever seen a smoker who's gone a day or two without smoking? they're usually irritable and cranky and eat more than usual.

ever seen a heroine addict who gone a day without heroine? they're usually sweating profusely, in tremendous pain, constantly throwing up, can't keep food or water down etc.

That only counts for intravenous use which is a totally different ballgame

^I'm not saying the effects are worse, the severity and longevity of the dependency is worse. On average it takes not smoking for 16 years to physically break nicotine addiction.

like scholarly white papers based on scientific research

you do realize that wikipedia didn't just make up that graphic right?

it's actually from the Lancet, which IS a peer reviewed medicine journal

look, i get that you quitting smoking is hard and all, but stop believing these BS myths nicotine addicts spew out to justify their disgusting habits
