Anna Patetosios, 80, moved from Greece to New York City in 1961. She and husband Demetrios rented their Washington Heights apartment for $65/month the next year.
....
Patetosios' youngest son, Panayotis, 43, became a cardiovascular surgeon. "Without rent control, my brother would have been a dishwasher," said her eldest son, Petros, 47.
....
Petros worries about his elderly mom, who just had a triple bypass and collects a measly $484 a month in Social Security. At the dining room table - he opens her rent bill - $119.68, plus an additional $112.63 fuel charge. "There's no way she could afford anything," he said.
Two other elderly building residents pay $107.98 and $136.15
Petros, a small business owner, fiercely defends the protection his mother enjoyed for 47 years. He has no desire to inherit the pad where he grew up either.
He said the landlord collects higher rents from 16 other units, including a neighbor across the hall forking over $1,400 a month.
"They're making more than enough money," he said." |

I live in Manhattan in a formerly rent controlled building. I pay $3200/month. Asshole across the hall (basically same apt) pays $400/month.

I wonder how he would feel if he got paid hourly at $7.50/hr. That would be more than enough money...5/29/2011 1:36:08 PM |

I always wondered how the rent in the apartment above Jerry's was only $400/month. Adjusted for inflation that's like $650, which seems a bit cheap for the UWS. 5/29/2011 4:03:20 PM |

Fair is fair and that's not fair. He has a right to complain unless the other people are really paying $3200 but someone else is playing the $2800 difference. 5/29/2011 4:08:56 PM |

Rent control is BS.
My grandfather gets his gas from the same service station for the last 40 years. I have never heard him say he should only have to pay 50 cents a gallon since he has been there for so long. Or suggest lobbying the govt to force the service station to do that. 5/29/2011 4:51:22 PM |

that is the worst analogy i've ever heard
i mean, i get if you have an argument against it. but that analogy isn't really valid at all. 5/29/2011 4:52:57 PM |

Rent control is basically a price maximum set on rental property in order to keep lower income workers living in an area where they are a necessary part of the work force. It's not just in NYC, but has been in NYC for the longest. 5/29/2011 4:55:57 PM |
