You might randomly read about them but I'm not sure I've ever met one besides one notable exception in my own family. For purposes of discussion I am defining "marrying down" as
1) a female who comes from at least an upper middle class family, has a job that isn't high paying and prestigious (teacher for example), who marries a guy with a less affluent family plus a somewhat average job and earning power. This means that she has to accept a lower standard of living than what she grew up with.
2) regardless of her circumstances growing up, a female who has a prestigious and/or high paying white collar job (maybe she put herself through medical school) who marries a guy with an average type of job (could even be blue-collar) and makes significantly less money than her.
I never meet these types of married couples. Sure people date outside of their so-called "class" all the time but actually settling down is a different story. 5/30/2011 11:57:44 PM |

They mainly do this for men with enormous penises because women are insatiable horndogs who cannot escape their endless craving of enormous dick, so pretty much this is a typical type of scenario. 5/30/2011 11:59:18 PM |

My wife makes 2.5 times what I make. I'm a software developer so not exactly blue collar. Plus, I turned down better jobs for the sake of job security while she was going through school/residency. Its definitely never been a sore spot. Heck, most of the time its other guys thinking I'd be uncomfortable with it. I'd be a stay-at-home dad if we had to (a couple more kids and daycare will just be too much). 5/31/2011 1:10:59 AM |

^^ I would have a hard time with that. You are a better man than I.

really? I would never have guessed that you'd have a 1950's mentality.
a year from now my wife will be pulling 2-3 times what I'm making, and i'm more than cool with that. I don't see this as some sort of indictment against my manhood or whatever. 5/31/2011 7:22:44 AM |

I don't know if the OP is talking specifically about a money issue as he is about a socio-economic stand point. If you have a woman who is a medical professional, or attorney, something that needs a professional degree or PhD holder then there will be a disconnect between her an the plumber husband.
There is nothing wrong with working a trade, hell, those guys make pretty damn good money. But if one of the members of the marriage has only a high school diploma and the other has 8+ years of college/professional school they are going to be on different wave lengths intellectually.
Just thinking about the male attorneys, doctors, dentists I know, all of them are married to college educated women. I think the same would apply if the situation would reverse. Which is why you don't see a lot of drs. with blue collar guys. 5/31/2011 10:24:12 AM |

It happens. I can think of at least one instance of each that I personally know. Though for the couple that exemplify #2, they married before she finished law school, and he is now working on a 4-yr degree.
Not common, but not unheard of. 5/31/2011 11:21:31 AM |

I know, I was being serious in my post. I know it's backward-thinking and sexist, and if you're 100% unaffected by it then you have a character trait that I envy. I don't mean to suggest that if my wife made more than me that it would cause any problems in the relationship, money doesn't matter that much to me.
I guess for all my qualities I'm still a little old-fashioned. Ideally I'd like to have a career such that I work and pay for our lifestyle while my wife can pursue whatever career, profession, hobby, or otherwise that she truly wants, regardless of income. Don't read stay-at-home-mom into that, unless that's really what she wants to do. If that results in her making more money than me, great. My stubborn pride can get over it
I say this assuming I actually land a good job in my field, which I am in love with. Money won't be an issue. Now if I end up in menial jobs for the rest of my life then my future wife making more money than me will be pretty low on the shit-that-concerns-me list5/31/2011 11:50:34 AM |

This describes my best friends... she's a global exec for a pharmaceutical company, he's an electrician. She didn't marry down, and he didn't marry up.... they married who made them happy.5/31/2011 12:57:00 PM |
