Initial lineup is out. I'd imagine that, just like last year, there's a ton of acts they still have to add.

http://moogfest.com/artists/

How much Flaming Lips can one North Carolinian get this fall? Still a lot to be excited about, though. Suicide performing Suicide is and . Other shit I'm excited about:

Passion Pit (not a HUGE fan, but should be a very fun show)
Tangerine Dream (could be a disaster, could be great, but I definitely don't wanna miss it)
Crystal Castles
Chromeo
Battles
M83
Holy Fuck
Oneohtrix Point Never/Ford & Lopatin
Twin Shadow
Toro y Moi
Matthew Dear
Tim Hecker
Little Dragon

Including the Lips, that's five shared artists with Hopscotch. Oh well, if I do buy a ticket to Moogfest again, that'll make the decisions at Hopscotch that much easier. All in all, though, lineup isn't as epic as last year's so far. We'll see what the additions bring.

Last year was an obscene amount of fun. Last year's lineup had 61 acts, this year's only has 29 so far, so this lineup is still only about halfway done. Should be another great Halloween weekend in Asheville. Probably most excited for M83 and Suicide.

Pretty excited to see M83 as well. I've been waiting for them to play a show nearby so this is an awesome surprise

doesn't look nearly as good as last years lineup, imho.

but, i'm pulling for my hometown festival to make it. they needed something up there other than bele cher. (which is nothing but a tourist shit show).

STS9 could be awesome, and Umphrey's Mcgee is great.

i'd really like to see almost every band on that initial lineup, except for a few (Umphrey's, Adrian Belew, Ghostland Observatory (ugh)). STS9 is the only band out of that horrendous genre that I don't mind.

^yep, feel that exact same way...i don't listen to sts9 very often, but they're a whole lot more bearable than most of that stuff

i've been checkin' out some of the lower artists that i hadn't heard and it's all pretty cool. that brandt brauer frick band is actually pretty awesome from what little i heard

ghostland is actually kinda fun live.

if you're into a shit ton of lasers and smoke machines.

"hey, we know our music is kinda mediocre, so we're going to spend a fuckton on some kickass lasers and this dude over here's going to wear a cape. just get fucked up and play with the lasers with your hands and dance a little bit"

[Edited on June 2, 2011 at 3:39 PM. Reason : granted i havent listened to or seen them since like 2008, things might have changed]

^haha, i could probably get behind that, even though their music is definitely boring. i think silly, fun live bands like that definitely have their place in the world

also, apparently that hans-joachim roedelius dude is the guy behind cluster. didn't realize that.

you know who beats their chest about chops?

people who suck at songwriting.

granted, there are great songwriters who have great chops, but i stopped caring about technical ability when i was 15.

Ghostland sucks, but their live shows are pretty fun, depending on the crowd.

I definitely don't think last year's lineup was better than this year. I wouldn't be surprised if they added AnCo to the lineup here, for some reason...

Every time I see this thread I assume it has something to do with Dr. Moog at NCSU. I can't imagine what that sort of Moogfest would entail...probably a lot of Indian people and complaints about Republicans.

Why waste your time posting things like that?

Anyway, I've never been to this in the I guess 2 years it's been in Asheville, so can someone fill me in on whether or not it's still up in the air to get tickets if I'm buying first thing when they go on sale?

And if someone can hook it up with that presale they're having tomorrow I'll be all muchas gracias so I don't have to worry about it...

They haven't e-mailed out the presale passwords yet.

Last year was the fest's first year, and they still sold out mega quick (the all-show passes completely sold out in a month or two tops IIRC, but they didn't do the stagger-pricing system that they're doing this year), so I'd get on the site right when they go on sale if you want a chance at the cheapest tix.

i think i'm going to bite the bullet and get a ticket when i get paid on thursday/friday. i like the payment plan option, but i might just go ahead and do the whole thing and get it over with. i realize that the initial lineup shares a lot of bands w/ hopscotch, but they'll add more. and i would love to see crystal castles, holyfuck, m83, and austra. and battles. and passion pit could be super fun.

people that went last year: where did you stay? was it $$$texas?

that is kinda my big hesitation. unlike hopscotch i'd have to pay to stay somewhere. blahhhh.

We booked for like a hundy a night at the Bellmont last week when I bought tickets (I believe that's the name).

PS - that's about what you're gonna spend anywhere, within the range of +\- 30 dollars per night. I would book asap for cheaper rates, obviously. And do the payment plan if you need the money to book a room early, etc.

oh $100/night isn't bad

i was thinking like $200. and then i was gonna cry. esp w/ a room share $100 - $150 isn't bad. i might be able to cop some of my dad's hotel points. and i have AAA discount.

I stayed in Asheville about a month ago at Extended Stay America. Our no smoking room reeked of smoke (seriously smelled like it had been smoked in daily for many months), but it was only ~$70 a night and about a mile from downtown.

^^^ is that walking distance?

i've stayed in a couple of places in aville before (most recently a best western right outside downtown). i would like to be walking distance to festival activities if possible because of alcohol consumption/ease of getting there/general vibe

BUT we shall see. has anyone stayed in the hostel before? that seems like a good deal to me. private double occupancy room for $60 a night. holla.

If it's not, it's like a 5 dollar cab ride. All those places out on that strip where the Days Inn is; the cab ride's only 10 tops.

I wanna say the Belmont IS in walking distance, but you'd have to look it up...

There are three hostels in Asheville, but I think you're talking about the one on Ravenscroft. I've stayed there about 5 times over the years, and am currently booked there for Moogfest. They went through a transitional phase last fall in which they moved the hostel a couple doors down (the setup at the old house seemed a little better, fwiw). Nice people - owner used to be a sound tech, fantastic location, just have to be cool with sharing a shower/bathroom.

"Belmont"

Baymont maybe? Def. not walking distance to downtown, but it IS walking distance to French Broad Brewery.

Amon Tobin confirmed. Second wave of adds tomorrow morn. Tobin is ok. I have Permutations and Pirranha Breaks, but I think the dude did some video game soundtracks and I had since lost interest. Tomorrow I am hoping to see some of the following: Beastie Boys, Beach House, AnCo, Com Truise (probably not), Washed Out, etc.
