That's not very sensitive of you, Mr. Joshua. One of those people killed Grandpa Fritz.

That one soldier appears to be dead, the one @ the end of the ramp. RIP.

My grandfather climbed the cliffs of Point du Hoc that day, 2nd Ranger Bn. RIP.

great thread. I can't imagine being on the shores, either...some boats that landed in the wrong spots lost all but one or two of their men.

I need to clarify that at the time my research was incorrect, as at that time I was going on recollections of family (his 80+ year old brother) and had yet to receive his records from the National Archives.

Here's what I was able to verify:

On 6 June 1944, D-Day, his unit, 5th Rangers (which he joined in 1942-1943 at Camp Forrest TN), landed in the Dog White sector of Omaha Beach. They were supposed to land in the Dog Green sector, however that sector was bogged down by units taking cover under extremely heavy fire. The Ranger commander, recognizing the situation at Dog Green on the run-in, ordered the assault craft to divert into Dog White. Like the C/116, the smoke covered their advance, although the 2nd Rangers were caught out on the right flank of the Ranger's landing. This was the sector where the 116th RCT regimental command group, including the 29th Division assistant commander Brigadier General Norman Cota, was able to land relatively unscathed. This is when Cota asked "what outfit is this?" and someone replied "5th Rangers" and Cota said "well then, Lead the Way Rangers!" And that is where the Rangers got their motto, which is still in use by the 75th Ranger Regiment "Rangers, Lead the Way"

Dog White Sector of Omaha Beach.

wading to the beach would have been ....taking heavy fire, and knowing you're moving slow as hell with 0 cover.

One of my favorites of all time, and I can't quickly find a link: "What Have We Learned, Charlie Brown?"

I think all of you owe it to yourselves to watch it. Moving to say the least.

Oh. 70th anniversary of D-Day. And my mom's 70th birthday. Born on the day of the invasion, as predicted by my great grandmother who was, in her own right, an amazing woman.

This. It makes all the petty annoyances and hardships we suffer in life these days seem like nothing in comparison.

I'm not belittling our current military at all when I say this.

But what amazes me is that those guys that stormed Normandy that day, that landed afterward, and that fought in all other theaters...they were normal guys. One day you might be a mechanic fixing a '38 Ford, 6 weeks later you were on the front lines fixing Shermans. Or one day you might be a textile worker, and 6 weeks later you were in a jungle in the pacific ocean.

Regardless of where they came from, what profession, they were able to get trained and do what they needed to do.

That was a damn good article, and I read the statement he released on the 10th anniversary - very good read.

This thread just made me realize that Rem Lezar has been lowering the level of discourse here (yes, I too was surprised that would even be possible) for over a year now!

Happy late anniversary, you redneck loser.
