"Falling Skies tells the story of the aftermath of an alien invasion. It follows a group of survivors who must band together in order to fight back against the invading aliens. The group, known as the 2nd Mass (for "Massachusetts"), is led by history professor Tom Mason who, while in search of his son, must put his extensive knowledge of military history into practice as one of the leaders of the resistance movement"

Created and produced by Steven Spielberg and starring Noah Wyle and Moon Bloodgood. I wasn't particularly impressed by the promos but Alan Sepinwall has been pretty high on this and frankly there isn't a lot of decent scripted stuff to watch in the summer so I'll give it a shot. Premieres Sunday at 9.

why does Noah Wyle do all these terrible TV series?

hopefully it's not nearly as lame as "The Librarian"

The dude looking for his son is similar, but not much else...somebody leading a group of survivors is kind of unavoidable in either zombie or alien invasion stuff.

Also here is a link to a trailer:

After my supreme disappointment with The Walking Dead, I'll give this show a watch and see if it's any better.

I like how Noah Wyle is yet playing some sort of academic point dexter lead role to show how smart his character is. Maybe I'll watch, but yeah, after the disappointment of the walking dead, not too much expectation is in this...

... unless we get some hot chicks in this bitch. I mean there's always hot babes in alien based entertainment.

that doesn't make any sense, it's not like the same producers/writers are working on both shows, you people are just associating them because of some superficial similarities.

its the same genre and likely has the same premise.

it'll be more about the drama between each of the survivors than it will be about dealing with the actual crisis at hand

What fucking idiot thinks The Walking Dead was a disappointment.

Besides the universal critical acclaim, renewed reputation for AMC's production capabilities, and garnering a huge fan base, when did it become a disappointment?

I, too, would like to know when The Walking Dead turned into a disappointment. Almost everyone in the TWD thread seemed to love it, I hadnt heard any hate towards it until I opened this thread actually

I, too, am hearing about disappointment in the Walking Dead for the first time in this thread. Regardless of whether or not you liked the Walking Dead it was generally well received, got good ratings, and made a ton of money so I would hardly say it fell flat on it's face.

That being said, this thread is about Falling Skies so whatever.

What channel does this show come on?

the walking dead sucked because most of the characters are unlikable. if the audience doesnt care about the characters the drama is irrelevent. same problem sgu had.

The Walking Dead started to suck around the second episode. I think I made it through 3 or 4 before I stopped watching.

TNT's bastard stepchild to Franklin and Bash.

And the plot sounds like more or a ripoff of War of the Worlds to me.

no idea how.

i had the whole first season recorded and ended up not watching any of it, partly because i heard so many comments from friends about how badly it sucked. not to mention reviews.

i really enjoyed The Walking Dead. sometimes if you don't like characters, that's the point.

i am simply impressed that they could make a zombie show...i usually get bored with the genre (done 10,000 times in movies) but the fact that they kept it fresh throughout the season was exciting to me. it's not easy to make a show like that have lasting appeal (for some, apparently).

A metacritic score of 82 means that "The Walking Dead is a good show" is about as objective of a statement you can get.

I did not realize Graham Yost was producing and writing for this show as well, he created Justified and was a writer on Band of Brothers and The Pacific.

The only reason I disliked The Walking Dead was that I had read the comics prior to seeing the show. The first episode of the show made me believe that the writers were going to be extremely faithful to the original material, but things deviated pretty quickly from the second episode on. I've loved the comic (up until recently when something happened which seems way too over the top to get beyond), and was just hoping for a direct translation. The show was OK up until the business with the daisy cutter at the CDC.

"TNT's "Falling Skies" (Sunday at 9 p.m. on TNT) an alien invasion drama produced by Steven Spielberg, seemed like an ideal candidate to be a flaming chicken dish. It's combination that once upon a time would have seemed fantastic, but where my expectations have been lowered by too many mediocre Spielberg TV projects that seemed like he lent his name and little else, and by too many terrible alien invasion series like "V" and "The Event."

But it turns out that "Falling Skies" is that rare time where the chicken tastes as good as it looks. It's a sci-fi series with a heavy focus on character and story (but also with good action when it's called for), and a Spielberg TV show where you can see his fingerprints in the work. "

that previous post was poorly worded.

that wasn't my only reason for not watching it --- i had it piling up on my Uverse, and I kept hearing so many horrible reviews from people whose opinions I respect, as well as reading bad reviews, that I put it on the back burner.

Before I knew it, the first two episodes were erased and I just gave up on ever catching up. I'll likely get around to it on netflix to at least give it a shot. I was just shocked that so many seemed appalled that someone had actually given the show a negative review, as I read and heard several.

those were both great shows and have incredible followings that are petitioning the networks to bring them back. Its not the shows fault that most of America hates science thus has no interest in science fiction giving these shows no chance to compete with the bacholor, top model and that show where people fall off of things.

V was fucking awful and it had nothing to do with science fiction. it was poorly written plain and simple. never watched the event but im guessing it was the same.

if you want good scifi Fringe is the best on tv at the moment.

So much for "limited commercial interruptions". There has been a commercial break every 9 minutes so far. With 3 minutes of commercials, that means we get 6 whole minutes of the show before another break. Unbelievable, might be enough to deter me from watching. Everytime the story gets rolling another break happens

ok maybe not sci fi but more of a alien fantasy show. Interesting to think about how our government, churches and people would deal with an alien presence. V and Event really knocked that area out of the park in two different ways.

the Event felt like they were making it up as they went

my favorite show-that-got-cancelled was Jericho. The production quality felt poor at times, but the story was great.

also, this premiere feels too long. probably should have trimmed it down, its moving to slow.

^something seeming like it is made up as it goes is much more realistic than something predictable and yes this was too long and was hard to sit through.

dvr?

My main disapointment with this show is that they skipped showing the initial arrival of the aliens which is the most interesting aspect of an alien invasion. I still have slight hope that they will cover that with flashbacks maybe but its hard to understand the situation without a baseline of normal for these people. They talk about all they lost but we never saw them lose it.

eh, why do we need another origin story? that's actually what i enjoyed about this one, they're already long into this fight and yet still know very little about their enemy. We don't need another half season dedicated to them being taken over or forced out of their homes or having their army/government incapacitated.

That being said, I thought it was unusual to introduce the rebel faction within the first two hours but I'm glad that it was quickly resolved, long enough to make their leader an interesting character but just short enough that his henchmen were only a tad bit annoying.

This reminds me of Jericho/TWD/and the colony seasons of BSG all mixed together.

the last half wasn't bad, i will probably watch the next episode based on that.

my guess for this premier was that they had too much for a one hour episode, so the producers/network decided to stretch it out to 2 hours. i think they could have cut 45 minutes pretty easily.

We have no idea how any of that went down outside of a 10 seconds kids description.

Yet somehow the characters have all these emotions based on previous events taht we know nothing about. Its pretty hard to be attached to Ben because we never knew him yet the whole show is driven off of the emotion to rescue ben right now. We have absolutely no perspective on what they are going through becuase things started off in an ultimate shithole so theres no way to possibly climax that because conditions can't get much worse for the characters.

This is basically a zombie survival show with aliens instead of zombies. No unique aspects to it all so far. You literally could have shot all the exact same scenes and just replaced the aliens with zombies and had the same show.

How is Fringe cheesy? It may be incredibly unbelievable but the same could be said about X-Files. X-Files is on a whole different level but Fringe is a damn good show IMO.
