I've noticed there are a lot of threads (sorta) about how bad or dysfunctional your family is so i decided to make one about the good things about your family!
I'll start:
My family is super duper accepting of people we bring to family functions, whether it be friends or SOs. I always have to warn people that they will be overly close (read as hugs and kisses and they will make fun of you) and if any family pictures are taken they will be in them. It's really cool imo, any person who may be around is just accepted as a normal family member even if its the first time they've met them. My aunt will always kiss whoever it is on the cheek. And my grandma likes to tap your butt when she hugs you. My uncle will hide your car keys... etc etc
(there have been a (very very)few exceptions of this in the past-but thats for a different thread )
It's pretty endearing.
your turn!!!! 6/19/2011 10:47:03 AM |

My brother is about to finish his double major in EE and compE. The rest of the extended family is a bunch of redneck hos, and I am so glad he was smarter than that (even though the parents have made it difficult for him). 6/19/2011 10:59:40 AM |

my parents always listen to/encourage my overenthusiastic new ideas/hobbies/projects
my mom listens objectively and i know for a fact she holds back her stuffy opinions for the sake of my creativity (i wish she would do that when dealing with my dad)
my dad is patient, an intellectual and life-learner, creative, talented, can't say enough good things about him. i sometimes wonder if he's really listening when i'm telling him some bullshit story about my day over the phone, he always comes back with humbling and wise advice.
i love them both so much 6/19/2011 11:00:56 AM |

My parents tried hard to be good ones despite all the difficulties they faced in the beginning. Hopefully I can manage the same. 6/19/2011 12:41:50 PM |

My family is great. My Mom and Dad have been married 35 years and have never been happier still. My sister is fun and is recently expecting twins. My brother is absolutely hilarious. My Mom has been lucky enough to not have to work a real job since I was born, but heads charity after charity and gives a TON of her time to the community. Etc, etc. 6/19/2011 12:46:16 PM |

my family is full, i mean FULL of good cooks. mostly my grandmother and mother (both gone). they were the BEST. my grandmother learned from her mammy whose mother or grandmother (well def grandmother, i'm a little hazy on the details of her parents) were slaves. and my mom learned from her and i try to replicate but it is really hard since they didn't really follow recipes they just knew. on the recipe it will say like "make crust" or something and i'll be like "uhhh where is the recipe for crust!?"
but really and tommy wiseau can confirm, they were really good cooks. not very healthy, but delicious southern cooking.
my mom's brothers are also all good cooks. my dad's side of the family is a little more questionable with cooking though, lol.
and my grandmother (this same one that was a good cook and had a mammy) had the BEST stories. her life was so cool. and she always told the most interesting stories (whether they were 100% true/accurate, who knows) to us. and loved a new audience (loved whenever i'd bring friends to the beach, etc). she would love to teach them the history of nags head and tell stories from her childhood there. that is another thing i love about my family is the history. sooo much cool stuff (even my friends think it is neat i am not the only one).
love this place. everything is perfect there (food, family, hanging out) and definitely one of the best things about my fam (mom's side anyway). my great grandfather built it in 1936:
and my dad's side of the family is a bunch of nuts (but in a good way). they are hilarious and have an awesomely DRY (dry dry dry) sense of humor which is clearly where i get mine from. they always like to sing and do skits too at family gatherings. which is hilarious. my grandmother will play the piano and my dad and uncles will sing. it is kind of movie-esque. other people would probably find it tres weird. tommy wiseau can also vouch for this. and this grandmother likes to tell dirty jokes. but they aren't that dirty. she thinks they are but they are like PG. haha.
both sides are never the type to leave people out. we've had so many extras at thanksgiving and christmas gatherings...whenever a college friend or a coworker or anyone someone in my family knows wasn't going home or whatever, they'd get invited to our family gathering. i like that about them. people are always welcome (probs because there are so many of us, what is one or two more people!?) 6/19/2011 1:03:06 PM |

My brothers and I are really close. We still wrestle around a lot. If we have company over, my mom cooks her ass off. This: Quote : | "will feed you and if you ever leave hungry, then it is your own damn fault." | My dad is pretty funny (more so now that we're older) and very personable. My sister is young and annoying but will hopefully become less annoying with age.6/19/2011 1:17:57 PM |
