Just bought a tiny little mini dachshund and I've been looking for a gate to cover our 6 feet opening to our kitchen to limit where he goes until he's trained. And we're in an apartment so I can't do anything to the walls

I'm thinking about getting this. It's kind of pricey but most extra wide gates I've found are close to $100 anyways. Anybody had experience with a freestanding gate like that? Any recommendations for something else? First time dog owner so I'm kind of a n00b

I got something similar for my whippet/jack russell, but he jumped over it no problem.

Since most dachshunds have Evtimov verticals, you should fare better.

It covers her 8-foot opening she has between the living room and kitchen. If you're concerned about the openings being too big just slap some fabric on it with a staple gun

Throw a blanket or etc over it until the pup is fat enough to not get stuck in the gate

Sure you can. That's what caulking is for when you're getting ready to move out. The holes needed to mount these things aren't huge. And you're going to want one that mounts with a gates. Having to physically pick up and move these things becomes an annoyance.

And with a freestanding one, there's nothing really stopping the dog from pushing and squeezing his way out the edge that meets with the wall if he's determined enough. At the very least you'll want to get one of those annoying baby gates that locks into place in a door frame. Toy breeds take longer to housetrain than larger breeds so you should plan on having something that's going to last upwards of a year depending on the dog.

It's what we currently use to block off our dog from our bedroom when we're not at home since she likes to go in there and eat our underwear, but if we leave the door closed the cats go all ragey and try to dig under the carpet

haha, I am lazy when it comes to these things But seriously, a mounted gate is going to be much better in the long run than a freestanding one. Dogs are tricky bastards You'd hate to spend $100+ on a gate just to find out in a month or two your dog has figured out how to get around it.

i bought one of those ooden baby gates at target for like $11 which was a bit cheaper than walmart.

we bought this gate for our kitchen entrance since it was the only one wide enough and durable that we found: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F1S9TI

it's pressure mounted so no holes go in the wall. it's tall so it may be a little extreme for a mini dachshund (we have a large dog) but it's been great...and it doesn't look like a cheap baby gate.

Hi! I have two mini doxies myself! Gosh, I love them...soooo cute!

Anyways, I have a free-standing gate that I got from Target. It's actually a baby gate, and it cost $11. It's exactly like this one, but I'm sure it extends further than the picture shows.

in my experience, baby gates usually don't mess up the walls, the one I have now is between 2 walls with flat paint (which marks up very quickly) and the walls are fine.
