long, but interesting
This is from a 100+ page book given out to all student in their bag at the new student orientation sessions at State. The picture in question appears as a 4x6 on a page about the tradition of painting in the Free Expression Tunnel. A new incoming student pointed out the word to his parents, it was then his parents and him who wrote an email of concern to the people in charge.

6,000 copies of the book had already been printed, to which 1,200 had been handed out. 600 copies have already been stamped to be mailed out. They came to the concern, what to do? Do you censor it or not. New Student Orientation refused to distribute the entire book with the picture in its current form.





After toying with the idea of cutting it out of every copy with scissors (serious), they decided:

"We opted for printing on standard mailing labels, at SG's expense, from what I understand. The message will say something to the effect of "Respect the Pack" and also contain the URL for SG's Brick website, http://www.students.ncsu.edu/thebrick, which is already in the process of being updated from last year. The sticker will also have the TK logo featured prominently throughout the book. SG volunteers will work with NSO's Michael Coombes to work out a time to place the stickers in the books. SG is looking for volunteers."

Update:
I have also heard that the photo is still there, and the book will still be delivered to students, but they are just not allowing them to be in the bag they get when they check-in... people with the student media groups, have to hand them to people instead. To solicit on campus and hand things out you have to get a permit and have the boxes of books there to hand out.

The only reasonable solution is to print stickers that list every obscene name for every possible race/group/religion in alphabetical order and affix them to each booklet before it is released. That way it's fair.

It literally took me 10 minutes to figure out what this thread was about.

I figured they were trying to sensor the Satan thing, then i saw the cocks, then i saw "SMFH"... THEN i saw the "nigger."

For an incoming freshman, this definitely provides a very poor image of the university if they happen to see it, and someone is going to get laid off at the next round of budget cuts for this, but it's a sticky situation... If it's feasible to censor it, i'd say censor it, otherwise i'd just hope no one sees it...

why the hell is the freedom expression tunnel chosen as a highlight of the university. I understand the point premise of saying hey we stand for free speech, but most of the time it's not even students that use the tunnel for graffiti.
