I'm in the market for a good sound system and receiver that won't blow my budget of about $500

Can anyone recommend and brand or system they have purchased and/or know of them being reliable and reasonably priced?

I assume I need a receiver that has HDMI inputs for my Blu ray player and HD cable box.

I appreciate any help.

Do some searching on here. There's threads probably no further than 3 or 4 pages back.
In short, Onkyo seems to be a pretty great choice if you need speakers and all.
