At the risk of betraying even more of my dorky tendencies, is anyone else anticipating the much delayed new album by Nightwish? It's now slated for release sometime in early 2011. I'm not sure what to make of the movie that's supposed to go along with it, but this early sample released about a month ago has me excited about the sound (although it has been remixed). Most of the other supposed leaks from the album are not legit. This one was actually posted as an MP3 on their official site.

Feel free to discuss previous Nightwish work and share favorites.

IBT "Fantasy Nerd Music" and "Nightwish died when Tarja left."

The choral bit there sounds too much like "Wishmaster." I don't so much complain about what they've done since Tarja left, but more that they just don't seem to be trying as hard to be original. They definitely have a very self-similar style throughout their albums, but now it's starting to sound repetitive instead of sounding like they're exploring a theme.

I will retract those comments if the whole album is released with the electronic stutters instead of that track just being a remix.

^ That post is less useful than mine.

We don't make new threads for records that are being delivered into popular consciousness, so why should there be a new thread for a record that exists in a tiny niche market?

I am looking forward to this. I really got into symphonic metal because of Nightwish. Although I think Tarja really made the sound very unique, Anette is not a bad replacement.

Perhaps niche records should have their own threads so that people who like niche music and don't want to wade through the indie rock circle jerk in the Music of 2011 thread can still talk about the albums they're looking forward to.

Also, in before the counter-reference to FroshKiller's broad topics thread.

Yes, they're also extremely niche, and that album also got its own thread. There are exceptions to most rules.

The point still stands. I don't check the Music of 2011 thread every day after I tweet a scathing review of Pitchfork's latest review. We're not running out of threads. So how about a compromise--if someone posts a thread about an album, people can choose to discuss it there without being hassled. If someone posts about an album in the Music of 2011 thread, people can choose to discuss it there without being hassled.

(P.S. How's that Movies of 2011 thread coming along?)

i'm stoked

within temptation's latest album "the unforgiving" has been tiding me over

tarja's "what lies beneath" was okay, but nothing groundbreaking IMO

Yeah, I'm not sure I really see the point of dumping everything into one super-long thread that's largely irrelevant to most everybody that likes a particular genre (or two). Hey, maybe Sports Talk could make a "Sporting Events of 2011" thread. Or how about a "Political Events of 2011" thread for the Soap Box? But wait, why restrict it to 2011? How about just "Music". That would last longer! Hey, come to think of it, why do we even need threads? Let's just make each message board it's own single topic.

^Well her new band is crap. There, I said it.

You wanna make individual threads, whatever, but don't pretend that the big thread doesn't cover a lot of stylistic territory. There's garage, chillwave, hip hop, and metal among other things in the last few pages.

The Entertainment board is full of threads not just for individual TV shows but for individual seasons of individual TV shows. At the very least I'd expect there to be one thread per show, but you see Hell's Kitchen: Season 9, Big Brother 13, etc., etc., etc. I'd also expect that sort of thing to be higher on the 'too many threads' priority list.

^^I'm not pretending anything. Truth is, I'd never once opened that thread or really even noticed it before you pointed it out. You didn't even make the thread. Why are you such a huge supporter?

Also, thread derailment achieved. GG.

A season of Hell's Kitchen is more than twelve hours of content, released over the course of several months. Even an uneventful show fosters discussion that can bridge from week to week, meaning a television series might need a thread just to cover a season in order to avoid having a weekly episode thread.

Meanwhile, an LP is thirty minutes to two hours of content--not that many do triple LPs any more--that is released at once. Some are worth discussing at length, but others aren't worth discussing at all. Also, most people are interested in more than one genre of music. That's why we have a big, catch-all thread that features real-time impressions of individual albums--hell, think of them as episodes--over the course of the year in music.

Album title changed to Imaginaerum, purported to avoid confusion with other things called Imaginarium (but more likely to avoid getting sued).

European release dates announced as late November / early December. Not sure about U.S.

I used to love Nightwish in high school. That kind of died once I started discovering more music, but for a long time I really loved listening to Wishmaster.

I had not listened to Nightwish lately, but did enjoy the new song. Video was not all that great, but the song itself was pretty cool.

imaginaerum is pretty good (there are several songs that i absolutely love), but i don't think it's as good as dark passion play (though they're pretty different, all things considered)

I love the pipes on "I Want My Tears Back". I wasn't sure about this album at first, but now I think I like it better overall than Dark Passion Play.

Not like I have any inside information, but it seems like when she went to the hospital, she got upset that they used replacement singers from Kamelot instead of just canceling the show. I think this was just the latest in a building series of conflicts, and they decided to go ahead and can her. May have made a convenient excuse for something they were planning for a while. Odd that Jansen could be available on such short notice, and for the entire rest of their world tour.
