I don't have a car and I'm looking for local stores that I can walk to and purchase snacks, drinks, etc for a reasonable price. My mom said she saw a store across from the campus but can't remember the name - thought it was a Family Dollar (but based on store locator that can't be correct). It was strip mall w/ a bookstore.

Take the Avent Ferry/Greek Village Bus out to Greek Way, walk to Food Lion?

^This. The bus is easy enough to get to for Food Lion and has a good schedule.

For the love of god don't go out alone to any store late at night.

+1 for ride the bus to food lion... busses 1 & 9 both run to food lion, and obviously an MVP card is a must.

The Food Lion on Western? Unless something has changed in the past 10 years I'm not sure I'd want my daughter going there alone. Has Western gotten significantly less sketchy?

^ What the hell are you talking about? That place has not been sketchy in the 11 years i have lived in Raleigh. Do you live in a gated community or something?

^^Place is definitely NOT sketchy. That is the main Food Lion I have used for the past 6 months, and the only remotely sketchy folks hanging out there are some of the people waiting on the bus that stops there. Other than that, its fine. Shitload of students out there.

The only time I've felt sketched out at that Food Lion was when a man was hanging out around his car trunk and asked what kind of perfume I was wearing. Made me think of all those warning emails about people that approach you with perfume or cologne. Other than that, the Western Food Lion is my favorite Food Lion.

I used to shop at Western Food Lion. That said, it can be a bit sketchier than the Avent Ferry food lion. I once had a really big guy come up to me at night in the parking lot on my way in and be all "Hey man I'll be honest I just got out of prison and I could use some cash for some food" and I decided to give him a few bucks . I said it was in the holiday season anyway

And, of course, the Western Food Lion is completely irrelevant to this girl's question, because the Wolfline stops at the Avent Ferry one, which is inhabited by mostly students anyway.

Doesn't the Avent Ferry/Greek Village bus go to the Food Lion at Avent Ferry and Gorman? I think ya'll are confusing this Food Lion with the other one behind cookout on Western, which the wolfline doesn't service. The one on Western is a little sketchy, but only a little. The one on Avent Ferry is not sketchy at all and is full of NCSU students all day every day.

Yeah, my bad I didn't read fully that it was the Avent Ferry Food Lion. Hell, I worked at that one when I went to school.

Kinda a trek for some snacks though. Why not just the convenience stores on campus? If you need groceries I guess you'll be hoofing it though.

My guess is that little 7-11 style convenience store in Mission Valley is what your mom was talking about. IIRC, packbackers bookstore is right there. It is directly across the street from the avent ferry dorms at the corner of western blvd and avent ferry road. I don't know about reasonable prices (esp compared to food lion), but it is certainly convenient if you are walking.

To the "not sketchy" folk... shortly after that Food Lion on Western first went up there was a stabbing there. This would have been about 10? years ago. Also, most people consider areas surrounding the Trees and Leaves apartments to be sketchy, which is just across the street from that FL.

A single stabbing over 10 years ago?
HIDE YO KIDS, HIDE YO WIFE, THEY STABBIN' ERRYBODY ROUND HERE!

I mean, I wouldn't hang out around back behind the store with the winos back there, but I don't consider it to be a sketchy area. There is a housing project across the street behind Taco Bell that I would avoid while walking, but I drive through it all the time if it looks like I can avoid being stuck at the light turning onto Kent.

Food Lion on Western usually has some pretty nasty looking produce. Avent Ferry is a little better usually. I agree with the suggestions to take the Wolfline bus there.

I went to the Western Food Lion (and the Big Lots next to it every now and then) for all of my grocery needs for about two years and never experienced sketchiness. The only thing that came close was one time I saw the big homeless dude with the dreadlocks (he told me his name was Satan but he's told other people different names) asked a Big Lots cashier if he could have some plastic bags because "the ants weren't respecting him"

^^Yeah, that's why I brought up how long it had been. I've never worried about going there, it's probably just as safe there as anywhere... still I'd think twice about wandering the neighborhoods either behind FL or across the street from FL at night.

^^ Lol...Yeah; that guy has been there for at least a decade I think. He's usually pretty easy to spot and appears harmless to me. I don't think the police would tolerate him if he threatened people.

Oh yeah he's harmless, I'm pretty sure that he's been living in that area long enough where he is now a staple of NC State culture. Funny story: one time this girl I knew went to Burger King to get her boyfriend one of those Xbox games they had like 5 years ago (the one when you just go around as the King scaring people or whatever). They said she had to buy food to get the game. She didn't want the food so she was gonna take it to the homeless dreadlocks guy. She couldn't find him in the Food Lion parking lot or around Cook-Out or anything so she just left it next to some of his stuff near a bush. Suddenly he jumped out of the bushes and yelled "THANK YOU!" at the top of his lungs then just took off running.

If you want the cheapest crap, food lion.

If you want better produce or have food allergies, harris teeter in cameron village FTW.

I'm sorry, but I've never seen so much denial in my life.

I too shop at the Food Lion on Western, but that place is sketch as hell and you'd be stupid to think otherwise. Open your goddamn eyes. The laundromat next door is practically openly selling drugs for that matter.

I would send my freshman daughter to...

Pearl is the best chinese take out I've had out of the 10 or so that I've tried since graduating, nobody has done General Tso better, or perhaps I just got so accustomed to Pearl's taste I can't find anything like it.

Second Avent Ferry Lion or Cameron Village Harris Teeter during the daytime.

I love Pearl, the people there have been taking care of me since I was a freshman in 2002. They are open every day, even Christmas. When I couldn't make it home for Christmas or Easter I always went in there and got my hunan beef and they were so nice it was like a home away from home. Incidentally they also own the chinese restaurant in the 'food court' in Crossroads next to Cold Stone.

The hibachi place next door is also very good and cheap too (I love the panang curry). I miss when Las Casadores was there, cause that Mexican place they've got now totally sucks in comparison.

that's 5 yes for pearl, 2 no.

i dunno, i've only had it twice, and the flavor is good, but the beef was really chewy.. kinda made it bad for me.

my regular (favorite i guess) chinese place is down the street a ways, first china at cary pkwy/tryon.
