Initially, I noticed a short duration of higher frequency shaking because the light fixture in my office started squeaking; I had just formulated the thought that I might have to call maintenance if it persisted when the stronger wave passed through which shook the building (I felt it mostly through my feet).

one of the first thoughts I had was if nuclear reactors shut down.

Since this was a 5.9 at most... I'd say ti's a tossup for Surry. I don't know for sure though.

Jesus Christ, the nuclear reactors are fine. It's a 5.8... Dozens of these happen around the world every month...

North Anna 1 and 2 would be damn near on top of the epicenter of this...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/federal-officials-2-nuclear-reactors-taken-offline-near-quake-site-in-va-no-damage-reported/2011/08/23/gIQAKnwIZJ_story.html

Quote :
"RICHMOND, Va. — Federal officials say two nuclear reactors at the North Anna Power Station in Louisa County, Va., were automatically taken off line by safety systems around the time of the earthquake.

The Dominion-operated power plant is being run off of four emergency diesel generators, which are supplying power for critical safety equipment.
"

Note I do not believe the grid is down, which means that the diesels are technically just running in case the grid goes down.

and no, WRAL.com isn't helpful.

My apartment shakes when big trucks are going down the road, but this was definitely more intense, and when I went outside to make a trip to Lowe's, lots of people were outside talking about it.

I was primed and ready within seconds of feeling the earthquake to make this thread.

But I was in a math class in SAS and people were freaking out and the teacher was still trying to teach (even though the projector was swaying) and I couldn't get out my computer and I don't have a smartphone GODDAMNIT I WANTED THIS THREAD.

the real problem with east coast earthquakes is that there are hundreds and hundreds of faults, most of which probably haven't been mapped yet. the problem is these faults are all very old and are rarely active.

I'd like to do a research study and look at the time people posted about the earthquake on facebook at different points around the east coast and see if we could derive the epicenter from that.

Sad for humanity.

That's like saying that the real problem with lakes on the east coast is that they don't have Hippos.

we got sent home from work because there was a natural gas leak. not sure if it is related to the earthquake though.
