I currently drive a 2009 Colorado crew cab with the 4 cylinder in it.
to state it mildly...I HATE the mpg that it gets. Its terrible. like 15 at best...everything on the truck is in good condition so im gonna sell it more than likely and get something better on gas.
What I want is something used in the same price range of about $18k I would like a 2010 camaro but finding it at the same price will be tough.
checklist: sporty looking good on gas decent leg room, doesnt have to be terrific reliable and cheap parts to fix car(bought a s10 if i ever need to do anything truck related) automatic $19k and less 09 and newer

I would say get a BMW 3-series, but you'll have to compromise on your 2009+ requirement to do it for your price. It is the world's best jack-of-all-trades car for the money, though.

actually, i re-read your list of requirements. sounds like you want an appliance car, and I don't really know shit about them, or at least nothing about recommending them to someone who isn't a "car person". You threw me off with "sporty", but I'm getting the impression that your definition of "sporty" means "not a Buick station wagon".
You can prob get a nice VW TDI (Jetta, maybe a Golf) for that price. You could definitely get an '09 Prius for that price. I'd probably get one of those two, if I had to spend that much.
I can't really imagine spending $19,000 on a car that isn't really special in any way--you can get good transportation for a lot less than that...but if was, I'd at least at least get some world beating damned fuel economy out of the deal.
[Edited on August 23, 2011 at 10:49 PM. Reason : no, the crew cab isn't killing the mileage much. it's just a truck--they burn gas. ] 8/23/2011 10:48:50 PM |

yea but the 5 cylinders get way better mileage.
its a poorly designed engine for that truck.
i dont want an appliance car...thats for sure. I am a car person and I have to have a car that has some character about it if i get a car. Ive had vettes in the past, mr2, mustangs, etc.
and I would def. be getting the RS not the V6. 3 series is an option. I will look into that.
Jetta is out of the question. too small and plain. 8/23/2011 11:17:10 PM |

If you're going to get a V6 "pony car" get the 2011 Mustang. 300+ HP, 30+ MPG. Haters gonna hate, but it's going to be pretty fucking tough to beat that combo. Finding a good one for $19k will be the real challenge, but you're on the verge of them hitting that price point if they haven't already.

I just don't see the point in V6 Mustangs/Camaros. They are completely unamerican, and I would be ashamed to be seen driving one. The insurance is still pretty expensive on them, too. For 45 years, those 2 cars have existed for only one reason--as a means of hauling around big V8 engines in an inexpensive car. I absolutely appreciate them for what they are, but they aren't good at anything besides being a cheap entry point to big V8 power. If you take away the big V8, you're left with a shitty poseurmobile that isn't good at anything except cosmetically mimicking the real thing...and to someone who knows anything about cars, they don't even do that--they just look like rental cars.
^^ I was gonna suggest spending a little less money and picking up a really nice E46, but yeah, it looks like with careful shopping, he could get an E90 328i, although he might have to get an '08 instead of an '09. 8/24/2011 9:55:50 AM |

Duke can try as hard as he wants, but it is hard to hate when a 2011 V6 mustang has more horsepower and probably double the fuel mileage of a V8 mustang GT from just TWO YEARS AGO.
yeah, but, but, but.... it has like, 2 less cylinders, man.......
edit: and then in the same breath recommend some shitty E90 with *gasp* only 6 cylinders, and even less hp, torque, and fuel mileage. fuck that.
So, let's recap. V6 mustang is somehow unamerican, but driving some pansy ass BMW would make theduke feel like a true american? OK cool. makes total sense.

big v8? lets stroll back to 1992...
5.0:
225 HP @ 4000 RPM 300 ft/lb @ 3000 RPM
Today's 3.7:
305 @ 6500 280 @ 4250
The point is that today's V6 is yesterday's GT performance - awesome in my book. Completely unamerican, what??? There are many other american automakers churning out shitboxes with no soul, and today's V6 mustang is not one of them. (maybe the previous generation(s) of v6 mustang are bullshit)

^^^ if you're going to do that you need to implicate that the 1992 notch back 5.0 weighed 2900lbs vs 3400 now for the v6.
My favortite thing about the 5.0 is if you took the cam from a gt, the intake from a cobra and the heads from an explorer (or something like that)... they made about 300 to the wheels.

but I'm not comparing a V6 Mustang to a fucking E90 BMW, because the BMW is--while not the best--pretty good at everything. Would I rather have an E90 328i than a V6 Mustang? Fuckin-a right I would. A 328i over a new GT? No, I'd take the Mustang. A 335i over a new GT...hmmm, I'd have to think about that one and drive both cars.
furthermore, I don't think the '11 V6 Mustang has more power than the '09 GT, although I'm not a late-model Mustang connoisseur. Aren't they exactly equal at 300 hp apiece? Aside from arguments that the '09 GT has already taken a larger depreciation hit, and will hold its value better by virtue of being a V8 Mustang, and the fact that should you ever want to modify it, it'll be a much better platform, the biggest thing isn't a hp/$ argument, because those are admittedly close enough that it's kind of splitting hairs. The biggest thing is that a Mustang is a sort of iconic car--that's really the only appeal it has other than really cheap straight-line acceleration. The V6 car is not any sort of icon, though. No teenage boy dreams of buying a V6 Mustang, and no 45-year old man dreams of buying a 30-year old 6-cyl Mustang to finally get a car that he lusted after when he was younger.
Those cars are just supposed to have V8s, and that's all there is to it.8/24/2011 11:17:12 AM |

^ they're tied at 305 i think. or within 5 hp of each other.
i'm not saying it didn't win... but it's a closer battle.
the problem is for 2k on a 5.0 you could make 400hp for 2k on a v6 you can pick up 15- maybe 20?

true... i couldn't own the car... but i could see why *one* would...
My biggest problem with the thing is that.. now every punk with rich parents who wants their kid to get a mustang but doesn't want them to have the power of a v8... still gets them a 300hp car.
This is what i would get with your intent.

What??! You're comparing a 2011 Mustang to a 20-year old Fox? Fine, then, if you get to compare their hp #s, I get to compare their current prices. Of course, the old Fox is an even shittier car by a wide margin, and it's old on top of that...of course, for 1/4 or 1/5 of the price, you could buy one that would blow the doors off of a new V6 Mustang.
Of course, it should be obvious by now that comparing a 2011 V6 Mustang to a '92 Fox is about as useful as comparing it to an '85 K-car, a '58 Chrysler Imperial, a '97 Diablo, or a '69 Lunar Rover (not to be confused with the British Rover Series trucks of similar vintage, although they are about as equally dumb of a comparison).8/24/2011 11:26:57 AM |
