I recently purchased a new 3 TB USB 3.0 external HDD. As a result, I also discovered that Windows 7 backup utility doesn't work with 4K sector HDDs. This is rather annoying.

Anyway, I wanted to start a discussion about Window's support for 4K HDDs and 4K compatible backup solutions. I'm also wondering if any of you know about Microsoft's plans for further improvements in Windows 7 compatibility with 4K sector HDDs.

I've read that. If you read my post, you could have probably figured that out yourself. I know that Win 7 as limited support for 4K sector HDDs and I know the big areas where Win 7 fails with 4K sector HDDs.

I'm interested in what Microsoft's plan is for improving 4K sector HDD support. Are there future patches for Win 7 planned? Will we have to wait for Win 8 or later?

As for the backup issue specifically, I am interested in an incremental backup solution that will work with a 4K sector HDD.

You should be asking this on technet's forums.

I had a peek at the technet forums. It looked like a combination of bored disinterest and unholy rage.

Alright, I can apparently move VMs to the 3TB 4K sector drive. I just can't create them there. Microsoft needs to sort this shit out.

You mean hardware manufacturers need to stop making new hardware form factors and completely ignoring driver and firmware support for them.

^ Whatever gets the job done. Considering that the drives have been out for months now and multiple manufacturers are making them, I'm going to assume that the burden now falls on the software people.

This is starting to get a little strange. A Fedora 15 VM would not install on the 4K HDD. An Ubuntu 11.04 VM installed without a single problem.
