It's a girl, and lice aren't a sign of poor hygiene. It's a sign of being in a daycare with other kids. We spent like 10 hours shampooing an combing and picking yesterday and thought we had it licked but we don't. Washing everything in hot water and starting over today.

I have to admit, shaving the entire family's heads has crossed my mind a few times. The girls don't seem amiable to that idea though.

Poor you!

I hope that we can avoid it by keeping our kids out of daycare, but I hear about older kids picking it up at school from time to time.

^^ we've raised the prospect of shaving our 3 year old girl's hair a couple times. hasn't been well received here either, but i'm confident one day she'll give in

FTFY

and I'd be finding a new daycare.

Poor hygeine has absolutely nothing to do with head lice. It doesn't matter how clean your house is or how often you bathe and it has absolutely nothing to do with the daycare center that you choose. Lice are HIGHLY contagious. Lice can spread like wildfire in a school because kids have a great deal of direct contact with one another. They share combs, brushes, hats, hair bands, they hug and wrestle, they may lay down on the same carpet or mat to take a nap. Lice will move from person to person just like the common cold. Not getting head lice is just a matter of isolation or dumb luck.

Put all the stuffed animals in garbage bags and tie them shut and leave them for a few days. Pillows too.

My sister ended up having to cut her hair off when my family got it. She actually brought it home from high school. She was in a school play and the entire cast got lice because the hair and makeup people were passing around brushes. She brought it home and gave it to my little brother, who took it to day care. I lived with my mom, and when they called and said they had it I washed my hair once and we never saw any. My sister just kept getting reinfected. Also, they do not like oily hair, so don't overwash.

Well the fact is that it has nothing to do with being dirty or poor. My friend in Florida who sends her kids to a nice expensive private school had a hell of a time getting rid of her eight year old's lice. Lice is just one of those things that happens.

dirty people would actually be less likely to have them, because they dont like oily hair.

we just had a lice scare a few days ago. My wife works at a 5-star daycare/preschool and one of the kids in her class had it. So we inspected everyones hair here at home but we were lucky.

They fucking suck. You spend hours combing and picking them out, but if you miss one, you're doing it again the next day. And they're crafty little bastards that hide in sections of hair that you've already done/pinned back. We can't take it any longer, we're paying someone to come to our house and treat my wife and daughter with a guarantee that it will work. This has been seriously disruptive....

Didn't shampooing (with special shampoo) work? There are sprays as well.

^ I think he should stay and they should go stay in a hotel

His child could be too young to use the shampoo/spray.

We tried the shampoo, it seemed to kill the live ones and then spent hours combing the eggs out but apparently didn't get them all. You're not supposed to use the shampoo more than once every 7 days so the next days it was just manually removing the fuckers.

They are quick, and newly laid eggs are nearly transparent. And my wife has long, thick hair. And my kid can't keep her head still.

At any rate, the lady that we paid to come in was extremely thorough, gave us metal combs with super fine teeth specifically for getting nits out. We're still washing everything in hot water just to be sure. I'm not certain that it's totally clear at my kid's daycare as we found another live one on her after she went back to school. But we're checking every night until our followup with the lice lady on Friday.

We're completely done w/ it. If she catches it again from school instead of spending hundreds of dollars I'm going to buy a set of clippers.
