I talked to my wife this evening who is visiting her father. He is somewhat of an awkward man who acts very young but from time to time offers advice. He spoke of a friend who had a daughter with lots of personality and suddenly spoke with a rare authority that my wife almost did not recognize stating, "You need to keep a VERY CLOSE eye on her. You'd be surprised in who you would think you would trust and find out they are pedophiles. Children are never the same after that kind of encounter."

I started thinking about this a lot while trying to sleep and I can't seem to shake the thought that if something ever happened like that, I don't know what I would do... in fact, I don't know how I would restrain myself from hunting the man down.

I can't keep her trapped in the house as she gets older... that's pretty unreasonable, but I don't want anything like that happening...

Jesus...

Sounds like you need to keep your kids away from your wifes father.

I find more cheery things to think about when I go to sleep, such as the daunting vastness of Space.

I'm confused. Who is the pedophile?

I usually play imaginary games of Freecell in my head when I go to sleep.

Glen: Brian, what would you do if Dylan was in a fire?
Brian: Oh my god Oh my god I don't even want to think about that! I don't even want to think about that! Oh my god! Oh god! Knock on wood Knock on wood Knock on wood!
Oh I can't hear anymore of this."

For clarity's sake, My father in law was talking about a friend of his, then stopped, and suddenly burst out with the statement about his grand daughter.

Not sure of the history there, but it does have a noter to it...

My brother had a friend at church, who was a really good artist and helped him paint some sets for a stage show he was working on, who ended up locked up for a LOOONG time for exactly this. He was totally shocked by the news, and very glad that his little girls never were alone with this guy for even a moment.

I hate to be suspicious of everyone, but damn.

How old is your daughter, Apocalypse? Mine is 2.5 and this issue doesn't keep me up yet. However, I saw the movie Taken about 10 days ago and that definitely upped my pulse for a whole 2-3 hours and had me thinking about the issue for a few days afterwards. But still, as she is so young and is with us the whole time (except for when she is at school), this is still something that doesn't keep me up at this stage. BTW, I would definitely recommend the movie... had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. (yes, the rescue by the father is too far-fetched [but awesome to watch!], but the kidnapping/sex slavery/auctioning is very realistic)

As for your FIL, seems like maybe he knows people that your family is friends/acquaintances with and that he suspects/knows are pedophiles. If so, you should ask him for more specific info. Prevention is the best cure. (maybe he was talking generally, but seems like he had specific people in mind when he said that)

So did he finish that story? So his friend's daughter was abused by someone? Or she was abused by her father? Because otherwise I don't see the relevance and why he would stop and bring up your daughter. Have him finish the story... as I said, prevention is the best cure. (there might be something useful to be learned from the story, if he completes it)

Do you think he was just trying to be awkwardly humorous and you just didn't catch on?
