It wasn't the suspect, but rather the suspect's teenage kid that killed the victim.

well I just wish they'd mix up the timing a little more, 70-75% of the time it's around the 48 minute mark when you know it's the real killer

^^You must be talking about SVU and CI.

Cause typically, in the original L/O, you know they have 'em if it is halfway through. Then, the rest of the show is about whether/what for they can convict the perp...and the moral/political implications and whatnot.

48 minutes? all you have to do is look for the "famous" guest star, 98% of the time they did it

^Yep. I don't watch L&O, but that's how it works for The Mentalist and Castle, which are just about the only two crime procedurals I care to watch. If you recognize Chrissy from Growing Pains, or the kid who played the son in that FX show that got canceled 3 years ago, they are guilty.

Also, if someone shows up near the 5-8 minute mark, is vaguely introduced and is on screen for <30 seconds then leaves, they are probably the killer as well. Because then everyone can say "oh, it was that guy, I remember him" when they are brought back at the end as the killer.
