Actually the list of demands most are seeing are things individual people put forward to be addressed in general assembly at the occupation in NYC. General Assembly is their own democratic process. None of these demands have been ratified and they have to be voted on. People online can help decide if they even come up for a vote or not. I support these protests and their main idea but yes there are a few dumb and also fringe issues that I don't like that people are pushing for.

I think the detailed list of proposed demands is a distraction from the overall message. The fundamental thing driving people out there is the power the 1% have over our government and our future. The people feel they don't have a say in government anymore and that the system no longer works at all. Going to the ballot box is deciding which corporations or wealthy special interests you like better.

It's a catchy populist message that plays on peoples fears, much like the Tea Party's spiel against government overreach. And much like the Tea Party, Occupy Wall Street is attracting the dumbest and most naive. That's how populist movements work. They are propagated by the idiots in society. And while big business is pulling the puppet strings of the Tea Party, behind the curtains of OWS are the union bosses. Same shit, different group of people.

What seems more idiotic is painting a huge group of diverse people (with varying interests) with a broad brush. Not everyone takes orders from the top.

So far this is the only official statement by OWS:

Declaration of the Occupation of New York City

As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies.

As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known.

They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage.

They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give Executives exorbitant bonuses.

They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the workplace based on age, the color of one’s skin, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.

They have poisoned the food supply through negligence, and undermined the farming system through monopolization.

They have profited off of the torture, confinement, and cruel treatment of countless nonhuman animals, and actively hide these practices.

They have continuously sought to strip employees of the right to negotiate for better pay and safer working conditions.

They have held students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars of debt on education, which is itself a human right.

They have consistently outsourced labor and used that outsourcing as leverage to cut workers’ healthcare and pay.

They have influenced the courts to achieve the same rights as people, with none of the culpability or responsibility.

They have spent millions of dollars on legal teams that look for ways to get them out of contracts in regards to health insurance.

They have sold our privacy as a commodity.

They have used the military and police force to prevent freedom of the press.

They have deliberately declined to recall faulty products endangering lives in pursuit of profit.

They determine economic policy, despite the catastrophic failures their policies have produced and continue to produce.

They have donated large sums of money to politicians supposed to be regulating them.

They continue to block alternate forms of energy to keep us dependent on oil.

They continue to block generic forms of medicine that could save people’s lives in order to protect investments that have already turned a substantive profit.

They have purposely covered up oil spills, accidents, faulty bookkeeping, and inactive ingredients in pursuit of profit.

They purposefully keep people misinformed and fearful through their control of the media.

They have accepted private contracts to murder prisoners even when presented with serious doubts about their guilt.

They have perpetuated colonialism at home and abroad.

They have participated in the torture and murder of innocent civilians overseas.

They continue to create weapons of mass destruction in order to receive government contracts.*

To the people of the world,

We, the New York City General Assembly occupying Wall Street in Liberty Square, urge you to assert your power.

Exercise your right to peaceably assemble; occupy public space; create a process to address the problems we face, and generate solutions accessible to everyone.

To all communities that take action and form groups in the spirit of direct democracy, we offer support, documentation, and all of the resources at our disposal.

Join us and make your voices heard!

*These grievances are not all-inclusive.

It seems even more idiotic to expect a cohesive message from a large and diverse group of individuals who came together without any central leadership, when we don't even expect it (nor get it) from our elected officials.

In an article about the Tampa Bay protestors, there's this little gem:

Quote :
"Fred Green, 25, of Clearwater said he started paying close attention to the news a couple of years ago. His wife, Toni, had gotten out of the U.S. Navy and couldn't find a job. He had to drop out of college to take on another job. Three months ago, they had their first baby."

-He had a job and was going to school
-She can't find a job
-He drops out of school, gets an other job

Logically, she could've just as easily gotten the second job he picked up.

Then they had a kid.

These are the people who are protesting. ಠ_ಠ

Maybe, just maybe, landing a particular job isn't the same for men and women. Also nepotism. You are generalizing an extremely complex situation of which no one has details.

And even if they did want to have an abortion, maybe they couldn't afford it or stupid republicans have shut down every available location within reasonable distance from them.

Interesting to see how aggressively the White House and labor unions are pushing to co-opt this movement. Labor in particular can be a plus because of their organization, discipline, the ability to rapidly mobilize their own members and the financial support they bring. However, it could also hurt the movement as it would likely push the movement more toward labor issues and potentially create conflicts when labor's interests and the "original" protestors (ex. labor has no problem taking part in the military-industrial complex when work at their factories is at stake).

The White House's push to build an "alliance" with the movement will also be interesting. Do they think they will be able to harness and ride this beast? Will the movement be willing to tolerate the President's influence especially since some of their grievances are aimed at actions taken by the White House? For better or worse, the President had to make a lot of compromises for the sake of governance and re-election, compromises that some of the more radical elements may not stand. Then again, the President could always say, "It's me or the Republicans. You decide."

MEDIA TRICK: Equating the tea party to this protest occupiers

HERE'S HOW THE MEDIA DOES IT:

Protestors: I want the government to take care of every problem in my life and take care of me.
Tea Party: I want the government to not intervene in my life and let me take care of myself.

Same morons just opposite viewpoints. Right?

The Idea. Yes. Fundamentally opposing. YES.

How the tea party is doing it:

1. Organized around a legal political entity and endorsed and supported elected officials to legislate into actual law the concerns they have
2. Peacefully and legally organized in an effective manner to communicate messages. Obtained permits and resources necessary to do so on public and private properties.

How the occupiers are doing it:

1. Used politically left leaning militant websites to spread information to occupy city streets and property and refuse to move until somebody has addressed their so far undefined list of demands.
2. Illegally occupying public and private properties and parks and creating physical human barriers imposing themselves on legal citizens working jobs and taking care of their families.

To call a group such as the tea party who has legally enacted legislation in the United States Federal government similar to a party of mostly 20-25 year olds without jobs is absurd and I'm sure many of you will continue to do so. It's obvious that you are left leaning and unable to mentally accept any other voices than whatever the left leaning organizations send.

Obviously it's a media trick. It's not even a good one. One is legally creating actual law. The other is costing the tax payers already thousands of dollars in police work and cleaning up their urine and defecations at their camp grounds.

The point with Fox News isn't where they get their talking points from (although it did help avoid this initial stage of "WHAT DOES THE TEA PARTY WANT" that is going on now), it's that they didn't have to camp out and cause a scene because they already had attention from the outset.

Still waiting on the left-leaning militant websites.

Well given that those are just Conservative websites (and Alex Jones at that... shameful) except for Moveon, that doesn't really answer my question. And MoveOn, while kind of retarded, is far from militant unless you count violently assaulting people's inboxes with spam.

And how can the Black Panthers be involved with this if everyone there is a white hippie?

Not that individuals are even relevant but I don't know if you have a lot of room to talk here either - you've got the dude who flew the plane into the IRS building, the guy who shot up the church in Tennessee a few years ago, the people who stomped on the MoveOn representative's head at a Rand Paul rally....

I just want to know what websites you're referring to here specifically

Well here's what you do.
1. Go to that website. You see those 20 articles about the protests! GOOD. Now go to step 2

2. Now comes the more in depth part. You might need to spend a little time actually reading and searching . But it's easy. Even a blind liberal moron like yourself can do it. YES, even somebody who was born programmed only to obey liberal opinions. Start by going through the articles and using CTRL-F and searching for those aforementioned organizations I mentioned. Another way to do it is through search engines by typing those organizations names

3. You still there? OK, once you find an overwhelming correlation between those organizations and the support and endorsements from moveon.org you got it. Give yourself a pat on the back if you got this far and enjoy a tasty treat.

Yes it's that easy.

Latest set of demands. Looks like the grown ups have finally stepped in and knocked some sense into the kids. I don't agree with all of this completely (and there are still a lot of vagaries like what exactly they're proposing with the "Buffett Rule"), but this is a lot more reasonable and practical than calls for free college tuition, dismantling the entire global trading system and other nonsensical fantasies.

Quote :
" CONGRESS PASS HR 1489 ("RETURN TO PRUDENT BANKING ACT" http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h112-1489 ). THIS REINSTATES MANY PROVISIONS OF THE GLASS-STEAGALL ACT. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass–Steagall_Act --- Wiki entry summary: The repeal of provisions of the Glass–Steagall Act of 1933 by the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act in 1999 effectively removed the separation that previously existed between investment banking which issued securities and commercial banks which accepted deposits. The deregulation also removed conflict of interest prohibitions between investment bankers serving as officers of commercial banks. Most economists believe this repeal directly contributed to the severity of the Financial crisis of 2007–2011 by allowing Wall Street investment banking firms to gamble with their depositors' money that was held in commercial banks owned or created by the investment firms. Here's detail on repeal in 1999 and how it happened: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass–Steagall_Act#Repeal .

USE CONGRESSIONAL AUTHORITY AND OVERSIGHT TO ENSURE APPROPRIATE FEDERAL AGENCIES FULLY INVESTIGATE AND PROSECUTE THE WALL STREET CRIMINALS who clearly broke the law and helped cause the 2008 financial crisis in the following notable cases: (insert list of the most clear cut criminal actions). There is a pretty broad consensus that there is a clear group of people who got away with millions / billions illegally and haven't been brought to justice. Boy would this be long overdue and cathartic for millions of Americans. It would also be a shot across the bow for the financial industry. If you watch the solidly researched and awared winning documentary film "Inside Job" that was narrated by Matt Damon (pretty brave Matt!) and do other research, it wouldn't take long to develop the list.

CONGRESS ENACT LEGISLATION TO PROTECT OUR DEMOCRACY BY REVERSING THE EFFECTS OF THE CITIZENS UNITED SUPREME COURT DECISION which essentially said corporations can spend as much as they want on elections. The result is that corporations can pretty much buy elections. Corporations should be highly limited in ability to contribute to political campaigns no matter what the election and no matter what the form of media. This legislation should also RE-ESTABLISH THE PUBLIC AIRWAVES IN THE U.S. SO THAT POLITICAL CANDIDATES ARE GIVEN EQUAL TIME FOR FREE AT REASONABLE INTERVALS IN DAILY PROGRAMMING DURING CAMPAIGN SEASON. The same should extend to other media.

CONGRESS PASS THE BUFFETT RULE ON FAIR TAXATION SO THE RICH AND CORPORATIONS PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE & CLOSE CORPORATE TAX LOOP HOLES AND ENACT A PROHIBITION ON HIDING FUNDS OFF SHORE. No more GE paying zero or negative taxes. Pass the Buffet Rule on fair taxation so the rich pay their fair share. (If we have a really had a good negotiating position and have the place surrounded, we could actually dial up taxes on millionaires, billionaires and corporations even higher...back to what they once were in the 50's and 60's.

CONGRESS COMPLETELY REVAMP THE SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION and staff it at all levels with proven professionals who get the job done protecting the integrity of the marketplace so citizens and investors are both protected. This agency needs a large staff and needs to be well-funded. It's currently has a joke of a budget and is run by Wall St. insiders who often leave for high ticket cushy jobs with the corporations they were just regulating. Hmmm.

CONGRESS PASS SPECIFIC AND EFFECTIVE LAWS LIMITING THE INFLUENCE OF LOBBYISTS AND ELIMINATING THE PRACTICE OF LOBBYISTS WRITING LEGISLATION THAT ENDS UP ON THE FLOOR OF CONGRESS.

CONGRESS PASSING "Revolving Door Legislation" LEGISLATION ELIMINATING THE ABILITY OF FORMER GOVERNMENT REGULATORS GOING TO WORK FOR CORPORATIONS THAT THEY ONCE REGULATED. So, you don't get to work at the FDA for five years playing softball with Pfizer and then go to work for Pfizer making $195,000 a year. While they're at it, Congress should pass specific and effective laws to enforce strict judicial standards of conduct in matters concerning conflicts of interest. So long as judges are culled from the ranks of corporate attorneys the 1% will retain control.

ELIMINATE "PERSONHOOD" LEGAL STATUS FOR CORPORATIONS. The film "The Corporation" has a great section on how corporations won "personhood status". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SuUzmqBewg . Fast-forward to 2:20. It'll blow your mind. The 14th amendment was supposed to give equal rights to African Americans. It said you "can't deprive a person of life, liberty or property without due process of law". Corporation lawyers wanted corporations to have more power so they basically said "corporations are people." Amazingly, between 1890 and 1910 there were 307 cases brought before the court under the 14th amendment. 288 of these brought by corporations and only 19 by African Americans. 600,000 people were killed to get rights for people and then judges applied those rights to capital and property while stripping them from people. It's time to set this straight.

I'll actually agree with those. I hope this trend of having appropriate demands continues, especially to lessen the influence of corporations on politics.
