Need one for my truck, dealership wants to charge a crap ton even for after market ($1400+) so I am going to order one and either put it on myself or find somebody decent to do it.

Anybody have any experience buying one online that could recommend a good source, or should I just go to Napa/Auto Zone/Advance Auto and consult them and order one through the store?

The best solution is to go to Henry's or Bob's. Screw the dealer, screw a regular mechanic, and screw putting it on yourself. Exhaust work is best left to the people who are best equipped to do it, and none of the aforementioned are well equipped. Go to an exhaust shop.

As far as cats, you can get an aftermarket one but don't plan on it lasting more than 25k-50k miles max before it wears out unless you get one with extra metal loading. Most aftermarket cats don't have nearly the platinum, palladium, or rhodium content of OEM ones, so double check before you buy.

You can still get the best prices online through a supplier like Rock Auto, though Advance will be able to get you the premium quality cats.

What year and how many miles? Might still be covered under federally req'd emissions warranty. If not try LKQ.

^05, 86000 not covered, already checked.

Shitty thing is, cat went out at 36,000 when it was still under warranty so I got it replaced for free at another Ford dealership, but since I am not going to the same one the warranty on the replacement doesn't work at this place.

I thought all Federally mandated emissions equipment was required to be warranted for 100k miles.

That's what I thought as well but after some googling I think I'm getting that confused with all those 10yr/100k miles commercials.

It depends on the emissions certification level. A Prius for example must have the cat last 150k miles.

Did you ever find a a decent online spot or go to advance? I have a 06 Nissan Armada and my Cats just went out, and like your situation, dealership wants to try to take every penny.
