Here's the guy that allegedly likes to touch little boys:

The Penn State athletic department and school administration are going to get cleaned out, and Paterno will get an asterisk next to his name.

The mustachioed man is Gary Schultz.

The guy on the left is Jerry Sandusky, a previous assistant coach to Paterno. He retired in 1999. Sandusky is accused of molesting eight boys over a period of 15 years. He has been caught in the act by Penn State employees at least three times. He met boys through his children's charity.

The guy in the middle is Tim Curley, Penn State's AD.

The guy on the right is Gary Schultz, Penn State's vice president for finance and business (which I believe includes campus police).

Curley and Schultz have been charged with perjury for lying about what they knew about Sandusky and when they knew it (this has been going on since 1998 or so).

Here's a better article with a good timeline:

Obviously, this doesn't affect Paterno's record. What I mean by asterisk is:

Deservedly or not, it's going to reflect poorly on Paterno, right at the end of his career.

Why would Paterno get an asterisk next to his name?

It will be interesting to see how this affects his legacy. If everything that is coming out turns out to be true, it could greatly tarnish his legacy/image and possibly prevent him from getting into any type of college hall of fame. If he seriously knew about this and all he did was "report" it...then he's worse than the other two guys who are in trouble with Sandusky.

Assuming all this is true (and it would be one hell of a frame-up if not) then Paterno needs to resign. If it was described to him as what it was (the rape of a child by a former associate in a facility he controls) and all he did was "pass the buck" there is absolutely no excuse.

Maybe that's not what it was described to him as. But I have a hell of a hard time believing he was completely in the dark about it. Though considering he has stood for integrity in the game for pretty much his entire career, it kind of doesn't make sense...

Was it actual rape? All I've been reading is naked showers and handjobs, which, while deplorable in their own right, don't begin to approach the level of actual penile insertion, if in fact that was the case.

^, This article isn't clear on exactly what was going on when the graduate assistant reported the sexual assault.

Quote :
"Sandusky allegedly engaged in fondling, oral sex and anal sex with young boys over a period of more than 10 years, according to the investigative grand jury's summary of testimony."

Quote :
""One of the most compelling and disturbing pieces of testimony in this investigation came from an eyewitness to a late-night sexual assault that allegedly occurred in March of 2002, in the locker room of the Lasch Football Building on the University Park Campus," Kelly said. "Hearing what sounded like sexual activity in the showers of a building that was supposed to be empty, a graduate assistant reportedly observed Sandusky sexually assaulting a naked boy who appeared to be about 10 years old."
The assistant reported the incident to Paterno, who in turn alerted athletic director Curley, Kelly said."

I read somewhere that the shower incident, witnessed by a graduate asst, was Sandesky having butt sex with the 10 year old. It is pretty f'ing unbelievable that this was able to go on so long.

I do think arresting those two guys for not reporting him is a bit extreme. They can't be the only people who could have done something about this and didn't.

^ By virtue of their positions at Penn State, Curley and Shultz are required by law to report possible sexual abuse.

But, there were other people:

Quote :
"In the fall of 2000, according to prosecutors, a janitor found Sandusky in the showers of the football building performing oral sex on a young boy pinned against a wall. The janitor, distraught, told a fellow employee that he had seen people killed in the Korean War, but that he had just seen something he would never forget. The employee thought the janitor was at risk of a heart attack.

In the end, no report was made, not by the janitor or the fellow employee he had told, both of whom, according to prosecutors, worried about their job security. And not by the janitor’s supervisor, who also had been informed."

Quote :
"According to prosecutors, the first serious chance Penn State had to halt the abuse came in 1998, when Sandusky was still an assistant for Paterno. A mother of an 11-year-old boy Sandusky had befriended at his charity reported to the Penn State campus police that her son had been touched and held by Sandusky in a shower inside the campus’s football facility.

Prosecutors said a “lengthy” investigation — one that grew to include allegations about a second young child being similarly touched by Sandusky in a shower — was carried out by the campus police. But they offer few details about the nature of that investigation: who was interviewed, whether Paterno or other university officials were apprised of it.

They do, though, say that at least two campus detectives took the case seriously and heard Sandusky admit to the misconduct in a conversation with the mother of one of the boys. Additionally, prosecutors said Sandusky was interviewed by one of the detectives and an investigator with the state’s child welfare agency. In that interview, they said, Sandusky admitted to showering with the boys and conceded that it “was wrong.”

According to prosecutors, a decision not to prosecute Sandusky was made by the county district attorney, who has since died. The lead campus police detective was subsequently told to close the case by Thomas Harmon, then the director of the campus police force. It appears Sandusky was merely encouraged to never again shower with a child.

The prosecutors, though, do assert that at least one prominent Penn State official, a lawyer for the university, was told of the 1998 allegations and investigation. That official, Wendell Courtney, said in an interview Sunday that he had learned of allegations about Sandusky in 1998, but had left it to the police and prosecutors to investigate.

“Whatever they did, they did,” he said of the campus police and local district attorney.

Courtney said he never sought to find out why no action had been taken. He said he believed that Penn State’s athletic director, Curley, knew of the allegation and the investigation, but was unsure whether other people in senior positions at the university knew of the episode.

Scott Paterno said on Sunday that his father had not been aware of the 1998 investigation. If he had been, Scott Paterno suggested, his father would have acted differently when he learned of the episode in 2002."

So the graduate assistant went immediately to Paterno to report the incident? I would think that a more natural reaction would be to report it directly to the police... or just rush in with a baseball bat and take care of the situation.

bye bye Penn State, I cant imagine recruits will want to be coming in during this sort of investigation, and when JoePa inevitably steps down who the hell is going to want to coach there. Not only will they have to step into the shadow of a legend, but will have this filth circling around the program for years.

To be fair, you don't know what the culture in the Penn St. athletic department might be like.

It could be that child rape was just the latest in a series of bad things that have been covered up over the years. It took TEN YEARS for this to see the light of day, imagine what lesser sins are still buried at University Park.

That said, it doesn't really matter what the culture is at Penn State. If you see a goddam child getting raped you stop it and call the cops. The only choice in that situation is whether or not the raper is going to be conscious when the cops arrive.
