So I am pretty sure I have become a BMW fanboi. I am truly embarrassed by this. I have always thought there was a place in hell for guys like me. But this damn car has become one of the top 3 I have owned. It is practical, has 4 doors room for the car seat, nav, big hairy balls under the hood (all be it with some help), good gas mileage and relatively cheap overall. Maybe I am getting older and do not have time to like more than 1 care at a time. Anyone know how to stop being a fanboi?

335

drove a cayman today and the cayman was impressive. i would not trade mine for a cayman but i would not rule out owning one. it was stronger then i expected. i did not get a good change to drive it hard other than straight line. it felt much more planted then the 993's i have driven but with out driving it 10/10ths i would not know for sure. bottom line my 335 was 1/3rd the money and felt like 8/10 of the car.

997s have really come down since the new body style 911 is out soon. I'd like to get one when I don't have a truck payment.

What's the difference between a rose and a BMW. BMW's have their pricks on the inside.

hey, what all is done to your 335, and how much did it cost?

How hampered do you feel by the lack of a limited-slip rear?

My dad had a 335i; I thought it was a really, really great car for what it is. An ECU flash makes sense. Adding an intake and exhaust along with it maybe makes sense. Anything beyond that, and it seems to me that it makes a whole lot more sense to just buy an M3.

You have to weight how much money you're gonna lose in depreciation on the M3 versus how much you're gonna spend on those 335i mods, how little they're gonna add to the resale value, and then how much the 335i itself depreciates...and then factor in how much more it's worth to you to have a real-deal M3.

I have no doubt whatsoever that for less than the, what, $20k or so price difference between the two cars, a 335i could be make to beat up on the M3 in just about every category...but while you might spend more for the M3 up front, I bet it would cost a lot less in the long run.

Now, buying a 335i that someone you trust has already modded is another thing. So is buying a 335i, flashing the ECU, and being happy with your ~400-hp 3-series.

*** I say all that without having actually driven a newest-gen ///M or anything but bone-stock, automatic 335i and 135i.

The E9x M3 is one hell of a package, though. I don't see how it lays down the performance numbers that it does. It's within a couple of ticks and mph of my C5Z in terms of quarter-mile E.T. and trap speed, despite having the same power and I'm guessing a narrower spread of power (it only has about 3/4 of the Z06's torque, haha). It's also taller, I would suspect narrower, and most importantly, SIX HUNDRED POUNDS heavier, yet is within a couple of seconds of a C6 Z51 on C&D's Lightning Lap at VIR (pretty comparable to a C5 Z06. Maybe the C5Z would be a second faster or something). Hell, the E92 M3 laps the big VIR course FASTER than a 997 Carrera-S or a 997 Turbo! Add to the list a Lotus Evora, and an Elise on R-comps. The standings for Nurburgring times look pretty similar, just proportionately longer.

Of course, after typing all that, I see that C&D ran a 335i coupe around VIR only 5-seconds (3:10) behind an E92 M3 (3+05). I bet an ECU flash and a set of racier street tires (say, NT-05s) would put a meaningful dent in that gap (that's what she said).

I've been a BMW fanboi since I was 8 year old kid and damn proud of it
Had huge posters of E30 M3 as a kid (and never owned one!!). Dad buying e30 316i in Europe. Most people that talk shit about BMWs usually either never had one or if they did, they never worked on them.

glad you are enjoying 335i. meth in future?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-3-Series-335i-2007-BMW-335i-CPO-DINAN-PKG-COUPE-6SPD-PREPAID-MAINT-/230698817147?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item35b6b8967b#ht_500wt_977

Damn, that's a good deal. CPO, Dinan flash, pre-paid maintenance plan, 59k miles, all the stupid options, all for <$25k. If my Z06 was sold, I'd probably buy it.

With the maintenance plan, will BMW replace the brakes however fast I can wear them out, hahaha?

I've been eyeballing E92 ///Ms pretty hard for several months now. It's a lot more money for a tick less performance than my C5Z, but it's a much nicer car for every day driving. I keep talking myself out of it by saying that I don't really need the backseat, yet...I'm doing the Mr. Mom thing pretty well with a 2-seater. If I ended up with a girlfriend or something, I'd need a backseat, but so far it hasn't been much of a problem--I don't do social stuff with friends when I have my daughter. It's kind of an either/or thing.

I actually like the looks of the E90 sedan a lot, and the 4-door practicality is nice (not least of which is the shorter doors, for ease in parking lots). They're cheaper, too, and there isn't any meaningful performance penalty. HOWEVER, the carbon fiber roof on the E92 makes my dick hard, haha. I actually might very well get the less-practical, no-faster, more-expensive coupe, just for that roof.

So he's comparing his used BMW against a new Porsche?? How about you compare it to a 2-3 year old Cayman S. Then it's more like "was 80% of the money and felt like 8/10 of the car"

So could a C63 AMG. And at the end of the day the BMW and AMG would need new tires and possibly brakes

True, but at least it would carry those as spares in the trunk and backseat.

I've been a BMW fan for a long time. there are two type of BMW fans..the true blue BMW enthusiasts who think that 2002s and E30's are cool and then you have those cock suckers that just like the fact there car has a propeller emblem.

all i have done is tune, meth, down pipes, fmic. total spent 2900. i am considering losing the down pipes as the dynos are not showing much gain with down pipes once you have meth. plus the down pipes are a pain the ass to take on and off for service. the next thing on the list is probably a lsd.

total i have 25,600 in a 400 whp sedan that is under warranty until 2017 or 118k miles. I have 45k on the clock now. i am not sure what else is out there that combines, power, looks, and interior quality that this car does.

first i was stating i would not trade mine in for a new cayman. second 2008 used cayman s' are between 35-40k. i paid 22,700 after taxes and tags. so lets say 62% of the cost. find me an 07 cayman s that is 8/10 of the 2011 cayman s. if you are going to troll at least get your shit straight.
