Cool stuff.
Houston: ISS, this is Houston, today we're gonna need you to reintegrate combobulators 231 through 457, conduct science experiments 45b-e and the 46 series in it's entirety, and clean out all the garbage smashers on the detention level.
ISS: uh, negative Houston, we're just gonna stare out the window again. over.

It's sunlight scattering from the atmosphere and bouncing around the earth to the ISS. unless you mean the borealis. then it's something different.

that was probably multiple times actual speed, like 10-30x
It still moves damn fast, you can watch it pass over with your naked eye on a clear night depending on the orbit right after sunset, where the sun's rays are still hitting the ISS but not earth below. It only takes like five minutes to pass in and out of our field of view.11/14/2011 6:56:06 PM |

To answer the question on how fast the ISS travels... it takes about 90 mins for it to orbit the earth once so that's about 5 miles/second. 11/16/2011 9:18:46 AM |

I want a live wallpaper for my laptop that will show thermal conduction effects of the surface of the sun. This is modeled in some games pretty well, Galactic Civilizations II, and some other things have it as well. This as a SS would also be nice. 11/16/2011 10:32:33 AM |

http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/SSapplications/Post/JavaSSOP/JavaSSOP.html Web Based ISS visible sighting prediction (this used to be J-PASS at the johnson space flight center site, but it's deprecated)
http://www.stoff.pl/ Excellent software that can track hundreds of objects and predict visible passes. Yes it's 6 years old, but it pulls the most recent data from NASA every couple days. I've used it to see probably 30-40 passes. 12/9/2011 12:53:48 AM |
