I haven't used better than my high end pioneer, but in my truck that I only use for hauling shit, like my bike to the track (200-600miles 1 way) my super cheap chinese unit does the job. no text to speech though 11/15/2011 9:09:33 PM |

I was looking at something along these lines, maybe not that expensive...
trying to stay less than 600. 11/15/2011 9:22:03 PM |

the alpine w505 was pretty much the top dog the last couple years not sure what replaced it . may be able to find one on clearance. i would recommend not worrying about gps/nav. even the best indash units still aren't as intuitive as say a garmin or even Google maps on your phone. not to mention the highly proprietary map discs still cost you and arm and a leg. 11/15/2011 11:42:28 PM |

my pioneer is infinitely more intuitive and faster than my top of the line android phone, but the maps are getting dated 11/16/2011 1:36:18 AM |

hmm lat time i played with an alpine i wasn't too impressed with the gps but i guess i haven't had the chance to play around with the new pioneer stuff. does your pioneer unit just let you say where you're trying to go be it address or poi? it's always seemed to get all the features of the phones up to date maps , traffic, etc. you have to spend a ton but to each his own

you can do all that stuff but I just use the normal input methods. I just meant as far optimizing a route to say, ignore tolls or be shorter vs faster. Also, the reception and speed of the gps on the pioneer are way faster than my phone. if I didn't get a screaming deal on my head unit, I wouldn't have one though. I got it for $400 new after rebates but MSRP is something like 1299 11/17/2011 12:57:29 AM |

I need a cheappp head unit for my car. Lookin for under $150...under $100 would be better.
Anyone have a recommendation for something in that price range with good ipod controls?

^^ I have one of these + nav in my truck. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SPO-Touch-Screen-7-Car-DVD-Player-Dash-Double-Din-CD-RADIO-Ipod-TV-Bluetooth-/280772357345?pt=Car_Audio_Video&vxp=mtr&hash=item415f562ce1. UI is pretty rough but funcyionality is all there and solid 11/19/2011 2:01:01 PM |

I bought an AVIC-Z1 off eBay a few months ago and have no complaints. They can be upgraded to the newer Z3 version by updating the OS that can be found on teh internets. I am a bit partial to Pioneer stuff so I used http://www.avic411.com as my research. 11/26/2011 7:43:44 PM |
