Oh wellz...use your noggin and try and get me something that I actually want...not something you want me to have."

She probably wanted to buy something she could engrave/personalize.

Maybe engraved ipad? Weekend at a B&B? Chef's table at a great restaurant? New bike with beer holders? Based on what I think I know about you, any of the last three options could be pretty cool/appreciated.

I think she's done shopping for me. I think I'll get maybe 60% gifts that I previously asked/hinted at wanting and 40% things that she came up with/wants for me. I respect the "thought" that goes into those types of gifts and will never complain (unless I don't get something that I blatantly ask for and need).

But just an amusing example (to me):

She was having trouble shopping for my mom and stepdad and ended up picking out a gift that she wanted me to check with my mom on whether or not she would like it. My mom gave a pretty solid, "your stepdad's sister gets us that every year and we never use it/throw it away." Then my mom told me about these decorative hooks she wants to get at Pottery Barn and that those would be a really good gift.

The girlfriend shrugs that idea away because it doesn't show any "thought" put into it and goes on to pick another random gift that is definitely a 50/50 shot on whether or not my mom will like it/use it.

I'm all for thoughtful gifts (I mix it up pretty well when buying for SOs)...but when someone says there is something they would really like/need...you get it. Done deal. Don't make things complicated.

And Slave....you're losing your touch. Big time.

I'm not losing anything. Familiarity breeds contempt, contempt breeds monotony, and monotony breeds hate. Sooner or later, you'll figure that out.

Love both of those. First is more versatile/wearable, but the bottom one looks cooler, IMO.

Honestly, if you're going to spend 1k, get something like:

Sinn
Fortis
Seiko (Prospex Series)
Tag
Bell & Ross
etc

Youll get something really well made thats unique in most cases

Out of curiosity I clicked the Amazon.com link for the green Seiko 5 I posted on the previous page and it is now down to $55.65. Amazing how much prices on that site can fluctuate from day to day. It was over $100 when I posted it.

A watch! Do you guys buy typewriters too?

Its hard for me to get over that watches are mostly useless except as decorations in the modern world.

That said these are quite pretty.

I don't think you'll find anyone arguing that the primary purpose of a watch is to tell time.

About 70% of Swiss watch brands have the movements made by Swatch. So no matter what Swiss brand you buy, costing 100$ or 1000$, they may all have the same movement.

That's like buying designer jeans for $300 that are made in the same Bangladeshi factory as the $20 pair.

one of my co-workers is from Sri Lanka, His parents own a factory where they make polo shirts for various brands of different price points. I found it interesting that Lacoste Polos were made in the same factory as St. Johns Bay, Haggar, and other brands.

However, it's not like they make the exact same polo and slap different labels/logos on it depending on the brand. completely different weaving/assembly/whatever you want to call it lines, with different types of material, etc.

That said, i'm not sure this is an oranges to oranges comparison with a factory that makes mechanical things.

I can believe that. I have had bad luck with most non-RL polos and stopped buying the cheaper stuff early in my career days. Lacoste and Nautica polos have treated me well, but it has been my experience that the cheaper ones tend to have collars that curl up, shrinking in length, or stretching in the waste/stomach area that makes them look bad after just a few wears. If I go ahead and get a legit Ralph Lauren Polo they seem to last forever aside from the normal fading from sunlight and washing that happens to all clothes. Even after several years they're still good for kicking around on the weekend.

Damn, at $56 I just may have to pick up that Seiko. I've been looking for a watch that I can wear to work and not care if it gets nicked/scratched and something like that is just the ticket. I love my Nixon and get a lot of compliments on it, but wearing it daily for 2 years now, I don't want the finish to start looking rough. (Not that it's expensive, but it's unique and has meaning as it was a Christmas gift from the lady).

For those who have the Seiko 5 with fabric band or are interested in getting one

[Make sure you see the 'mystery' model at the bottom]

I just ordered one, albeit for GBP 54, as that's the cheapest I could get it for, for delivery to the UK.

Anyway, after placing my order, I discover that there is at least one other variation of the model.

Here is the original, that I just ordered (I got green), same as the amazon one linked on the previous page (on left below)
Green: http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-automatic-sports-89/seiko-5-military-automatic-nylon-mens-watch-snk805k2-snk805-1716.html
Blue: http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-automatic-sports-89/seiko-5-military-automatic-nylon-mens-watch-snk807k2-snk807-1712.html

Here is a slightly different looking one, with 23 jewels instead of 21 (on right below)
Green: http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-automatic-watches-69/seiko-5-military-automatic-sports-snzg09k1-snzg09-snzg09k-men-s-watch-3004.html
Blue: http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-automatic-sports-89/seiko-5-sports-automatic-snzg11k1-snzg11-snzg11k-mens-watch-2885.html

Which one do you guys prefer? I am kind of torn, and I am wondering if I got the 'right' one... sometimes I like the look of the original one, seconds later, I like the newer one. I must say, though, I prefer the positioning of the numbers around the dial on the original one, and it looks more unique that way. Pics of green ones below, click above to see blue.

....OR....

Then there is a solar model, also with a green fabric strap, but a black dial:
http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Steel-Solar-Quartz-Black/dp/B004KSDHKS

And then there is this Seiko 5, also with green strap and green dial, but with a sports watch design:
http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Steel-Seiko-Automatic-Green/dp/B00629UOOK/

Finally, there is this 'mystery' model, which looks identical to the original amazon one from the previous page, even has the same model number, and says it will be released in March 2012.
http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Mens-SNK805-Automatic-Watch/dp/B006CHMRAG
Looking at the dimensions, it is significantly smaller: 31.4 mm wide vs 37 mm, and 7.3 mm thick vs 11 mm for the original. But it says it is men's. So does anybody know how this model is different from the original, other than size? Isn't that too small for a 'typical' men's watch?

^ You're way over thinking this.
#1 and #2 are contenders. I personally like #1 and I think that is the classic design.
# 3 is over-priced and slightly gimmicky. A solar watch, really? Maybe for your 4th grade nephew.
#4 doesn't look very good by comparison to the others in this group or its competitors as a "sports watch".
#5 is way too small for you to be considering, so just forget it. It's probably a women's version that is just improperly labeled on Amazon or something.

$93.63 right now. Pretty radical fluctuations from one day to the next.

Agreed. After reading your post I went to amazon because I want one of my own. It's still 93 bucks, I'll keep an eye on it and see if it goes down.

Definitely the first one though. 3 and 4 are no good.

I was going to grab that Seiko at $56 but I can't bring myself to at $90. I like it, but I think there are things that I like more at that price point plus it has left that "around $50" that I set for a watch that I don't care if it gets beat up.

@0EPII1--I like #1 out of that bunch. I prefer the style of numbers to #2, #3 is a bit gimmicky and I don't like the green dial with black face (OMGRACIST!!), and #4 is boring by comparison. #5 is probably women's.

^^^^^^i have the calibre 8700 that you posted at the top of the page. i love it. i've been very pleased with it...except that it has caused me to become semi-obsessed with watches.

of the two you posted most recently...i like the second one better. of the two you posted at the top of the page...of course i'm partial to the 1st one.

1) have no idea

2) read the reviews

3) i personally don't like the looks

4) if you meant "is that a good brand?", some people love it, some people think they are overpriced. read unusual history on link above and here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invicta_Watch_Group

5) more colors also available at reduced prices
