It all sounds like model runway music to me.

Trance, drum & bass and ambient for life!

Meh. But then again I am not a huge fan of most newer trance because it sounds too much like House. Classic Trance ftw!

Paul Oakenfold's Tranceport was what first got me into EDM, but I met a kid from LI NY who loved Jonathan Peters, Danny Tenaglia, Chus & Ceballos, Oscar G, Victor Calderone, DJ Boris, Peter Bailey & Richie Santana and the list goes on. And once I heard some of the shit he listened to I was hooked for life.

EDM genre distinctions are almost as silly as punk genre distinctions.

They help the people who are actually looking for the music. I guess you're not one of those people.

In general, I don't care about EDM. I like some of it, but it's down the ladder as far as what I listen to.

I readily admit that the genre distinctions in EDM are valid, but you can't claim that they're not comically finite in some instances.

With that said, they're not nearly as comically finite as the genre distinctions in hardcore punk.

What I listen to, most people consider Tribal House (which never seems to have its own genre on most sites like Beatport), Tech House, and Progressive House, and they are pretty distinct sounds. I dont think you could just sprinkle tracks from these three genres in a set and have it sound good. There has to be a steady transition to keep the crowd in to it. If you look at Beatport, they don't have a whole lot of genres and sub-genres, which seems to be the way most sites are. I think all those sub genres are just created like memes by DJs and listeners who are fond of a particular and possibly difficult-to-find sound, and want to find more tracks that sound like that. Being a fiend for tribal I can relate. It's not all that popular anymore unless you live in the southern hemisphere (or Spain/Portugal).

Thank you for that flash history thing. Good stuff. I especially love the bit on the drum machines. Brings back memories of crappy 80s music that sounded unique at the time.

Actually I have been pushing for my band to do house inspired stuff live. And I have been growing more electronic in my own endeavors.

3:40 to the end
