They probably did them in preference to exit polls because the caucuses aren't a simple in-and-out matter, so those sweet sweet exit polls that the media use to call elections right out of the gate are infeasible.

Also, for caucuses, they are a bit less intimidating than for primaries or general elections, because there's plenty more to influence the voter once ze is in the caucus chamber.
