^^^ if by 2009 you mean today, then yes welcome

Quote :
"Nintendo’s Wii game console gained some significant ground as a streaming video set-top box with the announcement of a new Hulu Plus channel launching today.

While the Wii does have a channel that allows you to browse the internet, Hulu’s main website is unavailable as is also true for the majority of mobile devices and set-top box web browsers. The new Hulu channel fixes that, provided that you sign up for the $7.99 monthly premium Hulu Plus service. The service provides early access to current TV shows from major networks (ABC, Viacom, NBC, Fox, CW) as well as additional video content not available to free-Hulu users. Wii owners can sign up for a two-week free trial of Hulu Plus, which is similar to promotions Hulu offers to owners of other devices supporting the official Hulu Plus app.

Along with Netflix, Hulu Plus is the second major streaming video service available on the Wii. Having both of those services could make the game console more attractive to people who’ve been itching to buy an inexpensive set-top box. At $149, the Wii is less expensive than a Boxee Box ($199) and a bit more than an Apple TV ($99). However, neither of those aforementioned set-top boxes have a Hulu Plus channel yet, nor do they offer the vast selection of video games available on the Wii."

^ my parents' only option for non-OTA television is satellite (and its stupidly expensive rates) and netflix/hulu/vudu/whatever on the wii (or a smart player of some kind)

it ends up being cheaper for them to buy several products like netflix and hulu plus

^ Yes it has current tv shows.

I dont know how they decide but some shows air on hulu a week after airing on tv- while others are available by the next day. If you have hulu plus all the shows they offer are available by the next day.

Primtime HD on Demand basically destroyed the need Hulu for me.

Having Netflix & Hulu on the Wii is just laughable since it looks like ass.

I am saving about $135/month by watching hulu plus/netflix on consoles versus paying for digital cable. Initally I was concerned about not only losing HBO/Showtime but all my regular cable shows as well, but I still have up to channel 73 coming through the cable line (for free) so all is not lost.

When you still have cable, actually cancelling it is a very tough call to make, but I found afterwards it has been quite rewarding and more than worth it. The biggest inconvenience literally has been the loss of the clock display on the cable box. If you have been considering it, I suggest giving it a try. If you haven't, and never will, then you probably should go turn on your TV before you miss some show that is on right now. Worst case scenario you decide to go back to cable, which means you can enter one of those discount promos they run and you will get new set top boxes and remotes. Also if you cancel hulu plus mid month (once your free trial runs out) you receive a pro rated refund, and you'll need it with the price of digital cable these days.

[Edited on February 18, 2012 at 12:40 PM. Reason : Sorry, no HBO show is worth $1500 dollar bucks a year.]

Again, welcome to 2009, or to some of us who haven't had actual tv for years, welcome to 2001... with torrents.

Seriously, get these shitty ass threads out of these sections. Stick with chit chat. No one here gives a shit about your "discovery". Also you can save even more money if you play with a stick and ball or live in a van down by the river... your call.

I have no issues with people making proper threads, but when they make shitty ones where the first post provides no real or relevant information or is associated with common knowledge in a forum specific section, internet protocol states that people must troll the OP. I didn't make it up, its part of the rule 100 listing.

Its like Blackdog making threads for every blog post from dailytech 3 or 4 days after the initial posting. Some of it is interesting, but most its shitty information that's be reported on other news websites earlier on with dailytech's craptastic viewpoints, bias, countless links to other dailytech blog posts and horrible grammar; like 1 paragraph of actual news with 10 paragraphs of fluff.

And again, this is the internet, serious business.

So this has some carry-over from a separate thread I created (hope that's ok JBaz)about Tivo.

Does it make more sense to just use Hulu plus on the PS3 than it would be to get a Tivo? I don't really have any need to keep the recorded shows long term, so maybe just being able to stream through Hulu plus makes more sense. It looks like it has most of the shows we watch (save 30 Rock).

^I like hulu plus, but it is not consistent and the shows offered are not a wide variety. I have found that they only have a handful of episodes for certain long running shows, so that is frustrating.

You do get minimal commercials, and the quality is always very good. Just make sure the show that you want actually has episodes, not just 'clips'. I researched what shows they had prior to subscribing, then I found out that the shows I looked for were on hulu, but there were only clips.

overrall I like it, and I like it more than netflix. However, huluplus' movie selection is very scant, so don't get your hopes up on their movie selection, it is mostly odd documentaries and cult films, still entertaining.

Yeah, not too worried about movie selection as we have Netflix, Redbox, and Amazon Prime (bought it for the shipping, streaming was just a bonus they threw in).

I just had my "promo" with Comcast expire, so I called them and was like, "yeah, uhhh I don't want to pay your 'full' rate. I'll just torrent everything or use streaming content if that's what you're going to charge me", so they extended me another year. It felt really nice to have the leverage to legitimately say "I will actually go somewhere else that isn't DirectTV".

I'm done with satellite/cable completely when my Directv contract runs out next year. There might be a half a dozen shows anymore that I actually look forward to watch instead of just watching because I bothered to Tivo them and I can't find anything better to do with my life at the current time. It will be a good riddance, and I look forward to the increased productivity.

don't forget, you can find movies on youtube as well. Mostly old 80's and 90's stuff, but they do have some recent flicks for free.

I'm thinking of doing this as well. No satellite and no cable. Probably going to do a combo of hulu plus and netflix. The lady is skeptical because she likes to watch the local news. Anyway I can stream the local news?

Does she watch it live or record it? I have this antenna for my tv and it pulls in about 20 HD channels, including all the major networks.

also, do you enjoy watching a political ad every 10min?

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I have a (regular) hulu question.

Here goes: Ignoring the content altogether, why the doesn't it stream worth a damn? In the past few weeks, for the first time in year, I've found myself trying to watch a few short clips on hulu and I've been surprised by how awful it is. It will start to stream, then stop to buffer...and buffer...and buffer. When it finally decides to start streaming again, it won't even pay for another 10 seconds before buffering again. For all but one instance, I've either found the clip on youtube or just flat out given up because it's not on youtube and sitting through the constant starting and stopping is agonizing. While I can understand this happening at work with our awful connection, the connection can't be at fault at home. (I just stopped and ran a speedtest: 1ms ping time, 50.65Mbps down, 52.84Mbps up)

So, I guess,
1) Does anyone else even use hulu?
2) If yes, do you have the insane constant buffering issue?

I use Hulu Plus exclusively (aside from torrenting the AMC and FX shows that aren't available) for current TV.

I have the 110mbps RCN internet service here in DC for $50. I've never experienced any buffering issues, and that's with three computers, two tablets and two phones all sharing the same wifi network.

I can't recommend it enough. The combination of Hulu+, some torrents, a Chromecast, an HD antenna and nice friends with HBOGo, WatchESPN and Netflix passwords saves me nearly $130/month.

Edit: I shouldn't say NEVER. There have been a couple -- like, less than five -- instances where I can recall being frustrated about buffering since I picked up Hulu back in August, but I get the feeling you were talking about more extreme cases than that.
