Quote : | "Miguel Tejada to return to the Athletics in 2012? The A's recently lost third baseman Scott Sizemore (knee) for the season, so Tejada is hoping general manager Billy Beane will consider giving him a minor league deal.
"I would love it," said Tejada. "Tell Billy to give me a call. I don’t want big money. I just want to play."
Tejada said he has become good friends with Yoenis Cespedes and believes the Cuban outfielder would benefit with him around. Tejada, who turns 38 in May, batted just .239/.270/.326 with four homers and a .596 OPS over 343 plate appearances with the Giants last season before being released in September.
It's probably a long shot since the A's appear committed to giving Josh Donaldson the first crack at third base, but some extra depth wouldn't necessarily hurt, especially if Tejada is willing to begin the season in the minors. Source: San Francisco Chronicle " |

Seriously I am not sure I can name a regular on the As right now. Don't they have some fast CF that steal bases, I might draft him in fantasy just so I'll care about something that has to do with this team. 3/2/2012 5:22:43 PM |

I can't remember being less excited for a season to start for the A's. Beane traded away all the good players and then got some Cuban guy that I am sure will be worthless. They should make a movie about his brilliant moves, oh wait, they already did. 3/3/2012 10:23:59 PM |
BeerzNBikes All American 3736 Posts user info edit post |
You're probably right there, unfortunately. Beane shifted focus to the speculative 2015 san jose move by trading young major talent for so many minor prospects. He went high risk/reward with "over the hill" pickups like colon and manny, but we probably wouldn't be better than TX or LAA for the next few years anyways.

Gotta give a lot of credit to the As for somehow managing to be good this year. Josh Reddick was a coup for them. I'm sure they'll fade as they start playing the Rangers and Angels more down the stretch, but gg and I'll eat crow for calling them shitty.

68.2% chance of making the playoffs right now according to the most conservative site out there: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/odds/ Interesting the change over the last 7 days was +40%!!!
But that is not taking into account the TOUGH schedule that we have coming up against LAA, NYY, BAL, DET, and TEX. Only sub-.500 team we play is SEA, but they're actually looking pretty good these days.
Of course, if we somehow keep the winning up against these teams - then we might end up winning the AL West instead of settling for a one-game WC playoff game.
Easily the most surprising team in baseball this year, and still cant get much national love because of the major metro market bandwagon teams. phuck ESPN

why are the A's a bigger surprise this year than the O's??? #wins per $payroll spend
Baltimore $81,428,288 Oakland $55,372,500
historically speaking, yes, the O's have been out of the picture for longer... but they have more 'stars' and 'talent' for spending ~50% more than the A's

considering how the a's have operated since billy beane took over as GM, i don't think saying the a's are a bigger surprise than [another team] because they've won a lot of games with a small payroll means as much as it used to because it's been the case every time they've had a winning season.
to me it's basically winning despite having limited resources vs. winning in spite of being historically really bad at effectively using your resources to maximize your return on investment in the form of wins. don't get me wrong, i think what the a's do is great, and they forced a lot of teams to rethink the way they go about player acquisition, but i just think it's more impressive that everything has had to go perfectly right for the orioles to have this kind of season. money is something you can control. the orioles' luck is not.
and saying "the A's spend $X, the O's spend $Y," doesn't account for the fact that the A's have a much better farm system than the orioles and should be in much better shape to compete over the long term. we basically have dylan bundy and i guess kevin gausman maybe, and then our farm system falls off a cliff.
and the rays and blue jays have both had a ton of injuries this year, and that has made a difference since we play both of them 20 times. both of those teams should be in better shape next year, which will make it tougher for the O's to win games in their division. meanwhile, the A's will get to feast on the houston astros when they move to the AL west next year.

I think you're underestimating how tough the AL west is.
Texas and LA are freaking LOADED with talent. We 'stole' a bunch of games and got lucky throughout the season as well... I'd also argue that Seattle is better than Boston or Toronto right now.
But yes, I'm looking forward to having Houston to beat up on next season

i'm not saying the AL west isn't tough. texas isn't going anywhere any time soon. the angels will probably hang around for a while, but their farm system isn't that great and they have a lot of money tied up in aging players. i don't know a whole lot about the mariners. the AL west just doesn't seem like it'd be as hopeless as the east does with new york, tampa and toronto looking the way they do, and if boston can quickly turn things around with the money they just freed up then they'll be back in contention too. i'd rather the orioles be in the AL west. 9/15/2012 5:54:25 PM |
