Goodbye, First Amendment: ‘Trespass Bill’ will make protest illegal

Holy shit, this is for real

Goodbye, First Amendment: ‘Trespass Bill’ will make protest illegal

Published: 29 February, 2012, 02:13 (wtf?)

The US House of Representatives voted 388-to-3 in favor of H.R. 347 late Monday, a bill which is being dubbed the Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011. In the bill, Congress officially makes it illegal to trespass on the grounds of the White House, which, on the surface, seems not just harmless and necessary, but somewhat shocking that such a rule isn’t already on the books. The wording in the bill, however, extends to allow the government to go after much more than tourists that transverse the wrought iron White House fence.

This is fucking real: searched for the bill here: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/thomas

62 Bills from the 112th Congress ranked by relevance on "347 ".
62 bills containing your phrase exactly as entered.

1 . Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011 (Engrossed Amendment Senate - EAS)[H.R.347.EAS][PDF]
2 . Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011 (Engrossed in House [Passed House] - EH)[H.R.347.EH][PDF]

and here is the PDF: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-112hr347eas/pdf/BILLS-112hr347eas.pdf

So you have to protest on the street in front of the white house and not on the grounds? Oh, no.

ok don't even tell me what car. just tell us the mpg's. start with highway since that will probably be higher and you can even brag a little bit

or just tell us the range:

a) 1-10
b) 11-20
c) 21-30
d) 31-40
e) 41 or higher

just put a letter a,b,c,d, or, e

These two guys are adorable.

I can't wait to see mass tazings in front of the white house just in time for election night. They'll play nicely on youtube next to the videos of the Syrian government trying to cling to power as well.

and so your non-answer gives 0-30. thanks!
answer 1) if 1-15, and 2) if 16-30
again. a 'non answer' assumes #1 is true

we'll slowly get through this

Did you actually read the PDF of the bill? Basically all it would do is allow them to fine "don't taze me bro" guy, who I'm sure got fined for disorderly conduct anyway. What is the big issue exactly?

They can hold you in jail for 10 years and fine you for exercising your first amendment right.

If the Gun-Free School Zones Act is ok, I feel like this would be too

It seems like common sense not to allow people to brandish firearms at the president

No, the Gun-Free School Zones Act is not okay.

Did that act save the victims in Ohio, yesterday? Fuck no.
Is the act unconstitutional in every way? Fuck yes.

The constitution is higher than the supreme court. The only reason they get away with it is because we fear our government.

With good reason. I'm blatantly stealing from Bill Maher on Piers Morgan last night but the crux is this. The founders could not have predicted assault weapons, jets, and nuclear weapons. No armed rebellion has a chance against the US military so I think it would just be best to get that thought out of your head.

The Founding Fathers lived hundreds of years ago in a world completely alien to our own. The Constitution can be changed (clearly, that's what the word Amendment means, right?) so it's not the inerrant word of God some people make it out to be. It calls black people 3/5 a person for Christ's sake.

Quit jerking off to it and join us in the 21st century. Every federal law and Supreme Court ruling is not a trampling of the first or second or tenth Amendment and we don't live in anywhere near a police state.

I don't think the founding fathers would change much from how it's originally written since 200 years later, I still agree with all of the constitution.

Perhaps not in these specific forms, but I think certainly they could have predicted that the tools of war would become more advanced and deadlier. Certainly they would not have been ignorant of history to note that the tools of war had advanced from clubs to blades to guns. It doesn't take much imagination to think that people would want a way for their guns to reload and fire faster than the musket loaders of the day.

I would argue that the insurgents around the world who are giving us a hard time would prove you wrong. In fact, I think history in general would prove that the people with the biggest and best equipment don't always win. Of course, the more we try and increase the discrepancy between what the people own and what the government owns, the more your statement holds true. All the more reason to keep that gap as small as possible.

We have been the worlds superpower and most successful country for the past 200 years with nearly infinite resources and ability to take care of its citizens and the constitution or declaration of independence obviously had nothing to do with it. Therefore we must change everything about the government because it has obviously failed.

Makes sense. YES WE KARN

The government is a cancer. When the population begins to realize this and seeks to extract the cancer, the government has to take whatever measures are necessary to prevent that from happening. This is the new normal. This is one example, many more are to come.
