It's a labor of love for Lutz, whose knack for breaking down an opponent's strengths and weaknesses has endured through technological advances that dramatically change the way it's accomplished. "So many games go down to one possession, two possessions," Lutz said. "Scouting is one of the many ways you hopefully win a game." Technology changes N.C. State, coming off back-to-back losses, desperately needs a win. And Tuesday's opponent, North Carolina, hammered the Wolfpack last month. The first game with UNC was four days away when N.C. State's players and coaches boarded a bus outside Miami's BankUnited Center following their victory in late January. Lutz immediately turned on his iPad and started reviewing a downloaded UNC game. Times sure have changed. Sliding in a DVD is outdated to some programs, and the era of trading cassette tapes is long gone. Lutz, 53, first scouted with paper and a pencil. As a 15-year-old third base coach, assisting the nationally acclaimed Howard's Furniture men's softball team coached by his Hall of Fame father, Lutz charted pitches. It didn't matter if his N.C.-based team was playing at the time or not. After games, he'd visit other fields and study the fiercest hitters from chief contenders. Lutz still remembers that Bruce Meade, a 6-foot-7 slugger for Jerry's Caterers out of Florida, had more trouble with low-and-outside offerings, a fact that put Howard's Furniture pitcher Buddy Slater at risk on up-the-middle line drives. The pitch needed to be up in the strike zone against Craig Elliott of Georgia-based Ken Sanders Ford. "They were going to hit home runs most of the time, but if you can get one or two outs you wouldn't have normally gotten, that can be the difference in the game," Lutz said. He has taken the same approach to coaching basketball. As a graduate assistant at Clemson in the mid-1980s, Lutz traveled to watch future opponents play in person. He'd listen closely to a coach's audible play call, then watch film of the same sequence days later. Lutz made similar trips after becoming Pfeiffer's head coach in 1986, jumping in his car after practice and driving to places like Laurinburg to catch a first-hand look at a conference foe. "Not everybody in that league did that," Lutz said. "We were looking for any edge we could get." Return to roots Lutz returned to his analytical roots last season. After being fired as Charlotte's head coach, he joined Fred Hoiberg's staff at Iowa State and scouted every game for the Cyclones, preparing him well for the role he's adopted at N.C. State. Before the Wolfpack hired Gottfried, he worked as an ESPN commentator, a job that gave him precious access to the meeting rooms and practice gyms of storied programs. Gottfried was a sponge, noting methods that could make him a better coach, and he liked the way Kentucky's John Calipari put assistant John Robic in charge of scouting. N.C. State's other assistants contribute, but Lutz is the clear-cut face of that operation. "Bobby does a great job communicating to our guys what we want to try to concentrate on," Gottfried said. It's a process that runs smoothly thanks to tech-savvy staff members Levi Watkins and Nima Omidvar, who convinced Lutz that iPads are user-friendly, convenient scouting tools. ACC schools use a server that features the television copy of every league game, often posted within an hour of the final buzzer sounding. Watkins and Omidvar can upload games onto a DVSport application that Lutz accesses easily while traveling, working out or even sitting in his parked car awaiting the start of a recruit's high school game. Lutz likes to watch a game in its entirety, without interruption, before dissecting it. With some teams, he concerns himself more with personnel and the tendencies of particular players. For a team such as Georgia Tech, which has a wide variety of offensive sets, he'll note the reliance on ball screens and pass along effective ways to defend them. "We know about everything, but we're not expecting our players to know everything," Lutz said. "We just try to condense it down. I used to say the Reader's Digest version, but I guess it's the Twitter version in today's world." Following the plan Wake Forest visited Raleigh earlier this month for a rematch with the Wolfpack, and left-handed forward Nikita Mescheriakov opened the game by scoring on a driving layup. Lutz was visibly frustrated. "To start the game, to let him drive left, that bothers me," Lutz said. "That shouldn't happen." N.C. State had prevented Wake from finding any offensive rhythm three weeks earlier in Winston-Salem, limiting the Demon Deacons to 29 points over the first 35 minutes. Shooting guard C.J. Harris managed only 10 points on 3-for-12 shooting because the Wolfpack defended him precisely the way Lutz wanted. Instead of using ball screens set to his right, Harris often rejects the pick by design, dribbling left and shooting a step-back jumper. N.C. State defenders were told to stay at home, trust their help and not preoccupy themselves with fighting over the screen. That strategy led to a long afternoon for Harris. Lutz did such a good job of scouting the Demon Deacons that their plays had different names when the Wolfpack faced Wake in Raleigh. Not surprisingly, Lutz recognized the sets and quickly communicated the changes to his players. Harris fared better, scoring 21 points, but N.C. State claimed an 87-76 win. Pregame preparation takes on added importance against teams with superior talent, and North Carolina's lineup is loaded with future pros. Attempting to even the playing field through thorough scouting is one of the most compelling challenges of Lutz's job. "I love it," he said. "It's part of why I got into this, to teach and coach. It's all part of game prep, and it's fun to really be able to concentrate on that." "

I wanted us to hire Bobby Lutz as head coach when we replaced Herb. Imagine if that would of happened. As you can all imagine I was overjoyed after finding out we had been hired him as an assistant by Coach G. Really hope he sticks around, hes a real asset to NCSU.

So help me out. I have a friend that believes that Lutz is shady. He mentioned something about the recruitment of Michael Beasley as part of his reasoning. What is the skinny on this. I want to defend him but do not have all of the facts.

Yea my boss used to run the lighting and sound for Horton Arena and has also mentioned several times that we better watch it because Bobby is shady and was known for recruiting violations down there. Said he saw several things over the 3 or 4 years he was working around there that he thought were against the rules, but said he was still a nice guy.

He is no fan of any local teams (yankee) but a pretty big sports guy and knows a helluva lot more about Bobby's history in Charlotte than I do. Just corroborating what scotieb24 had said, that I know somebody else who has said Lutz is shady.

According to him, the Beasley situation doesn't make Bobby Lutz shady at all. Let me tell you the story (from his memory):

It all boils down to Delante Hill. Delante Hill played for Lutz back in the day and was Beasley's AAU coach - the two were very tight together. Hill got hired at UNCC and so Beasley committed to UNCC at 15 years old, and stayed committed throughout high school. All of the pieces started falling into place at UNCC and the program peaked.

Bob Huggins (Thuggy Bear, apparently), the coach at the UNCC arch rival Cincinnatti, was fired. He was then hired at Kansas State. He beat out UNCC and hired Delante Hill to his staff for $500k, effectively doubling his salary. Beasley immediately decommitted from UNCC and committed to KState.

Bobby Lutz took the high road and commented that this was just how college ball worked, but the damage was done. UNCC basketball began a drastic decline and Lutz was eventually fired. KState, meanwhile, became somewhat relevant nationally (his eyes glaze over and says "that could have been us...") while UNCC, well, became UNCC.

So there's still bad blood between UNCC and Cincinnatti/Huggins/KState. He says you shouldn't talk about Beasley with a 49ers fan...you could say its the "Personal Fouls" of UNCC.

He also mentions that he thinks Lutz will stay since there is still another year on the buyout (I thought it was done, but w/e) and because he may have a kid at NC State on the soccer team. He recruited Tyler Lewis at UNCC pretty hard so that's another good connection.

He mentions that UNCC has a player off of Lewis's team too, Darrion Clark - PF.

I've always thought a lot about Coach Lutz. Went to a lot of UNCC bball games in high school and he definitely was a heck of a coach. Even if he doesn't stick around 2 or 3 more years I think his work ethic and the way he dissects offensive sets can be passed down to some of our younger assistants.

Don't forget Coach Early was at UNCC also.
