"Who did you pick as ACC freshman of the year?

With four top-25 recruits and several four-star prospects entering the fold, there will be a nice influx of young talent in the ACC. When it comes to making the most impact, though, I think it comes down to Robert Carter (Georgia Tech), Rodney Purvis (North Carolina State) and Rasheed Sulaimon (Duke). Carter will need to make an immediate impact down low for the Yellow Jackets, and I think he will get every opportunity. Purvis brings scoring on the wing, and Sulaimon is the best player entering the conference. If Duke's Andre Dawkins doesn't play next year, Sulaimon will start immediately (he could do that anyway) and should be a top-10 frosh in terms of production. Moreover, North Carolina's Marcus Paige could get the keys to the Tar Heels immediately. It will be a close race, but Purvis could have the best opportunity."

I don't think any other school in the country shares the same struggle as NC State. We have two teams in our immediate vicinity who are not only championship material but have actually won within the past 5 years. You can't go out to a bar or sports venue in Raleigh, THE WOLFPACK'S OWN CITY, without running into somebody screaming for the Heels or the Blue Devils. Even on our own fucking home turf we can't go out and cheer our team on without seeing a bandwagon of people screaming for our rivals. Couple this with the fact that our school's record has been relatively abysmal throughout the same period our rivals were winning championships and not only are we struggling but we became the butt of every fucking joke in the Triangle mentioning the ACC.

Thank goodness for Gottfried (so far, don't count those chickens) and thank goodness for our strong showing in the tournament last year. I am entirely confident that, if the status quo upholds, Gottfried could realistically turn the Wolfpack into a championship team at last. I don't think I would have ever been able to honestly say those words even 2 years ago, but I am at least grateful for the opportunity, however small and unsure it may be at this juncture, to say them now and actually believe them.

an article today that is kinda relevant to the conversation

Quote :
"North Carolinians back the Tar Heels ... unless NC State is playing

By Aaron Schoonmaker

Every basketball season before the Battle of the Blues, Public Policy Polling releases a report analyzing peoples rooting interest in the rivalry. The most recent release in February had 41 percent of North Carolinians pulling for UNC while 31 percent were pulling for Duke (remember this number for later).

An exact science? No. Interesting? Yes.

Friday, PPP took it one step further by including NC State into the mix and gauging their fan base compared to that of Duke and UNC. The result was that North Carolinians back the Tar Heels … unless NC State is playing. It may not make sense now, but stay with me.

First, the big number. North Carolinians hold a 32-27 margin in rooting interest in favor of UNC over NC State. That said, 41 percent of North Carolinians could care less either way according to the poll. UNC carried every geographical region of the state in fan interest over NC State, including in the Triangle where the edge was 37-30 in favor of the Heels.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the State-Carolina comparison – and predictable depending on who you ask – is the ideological divide in the fan bases. According to the report, UNC is backed by people claiming to be “very liberal” by a 51-14 margin. Those on the other end of the spectrum, “very conservative,” stand behind the Wolfpack, 30-27.

Remember the 41-31 number I threw out in the opening paragraph that favored the Tar Heels over the Devils? That number has apparently changed since February. The latest poll now has UNC with a 42-25 edge in backing.

Part one of the statement is now fulfilled – North Carolinians prefer UNC.

So what happens when UNC is removed and NC State is pitted against Duke?

State is backed over Duke in every region of the state and claims a 40-26 overall advantage. How did the gap get so big? Answer is the support of the males. Men back State over Duke in the state by a 44-18 margin (women are closer at 37-32).

But in a three-team circle of rivalries, there has to be one fan base on the sidelines. When that happens, who does the third teams’ fan base cheer for?

When UNC plays State, Duke fans cheer for NC State 28-25.
When State plays Duke, UNC fans cheer for NC State 60-22.
When UNC plays Duke, NC State fans cheer for UNC 38-36.

Part two of the statement now fulfilled – when NC State is playing in one of the rivalry games, the non-participating fan base backs NC State.

Ah, the power of numbers.

It's kind of analogous to the whole Bush-Clinton-Perot votes back in 92'.

Purvis with 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 turnovers at half time.

He sat a lot after picking up 2 fouls in 6 minutes on the court.

USA up 48-24 on the Virgin Islands with Shaq Goodwin leading scorers with 13.

Purvis picking up 2 fouls in the third. Not a whole lot else.

Tons of fouls against the Isles. 3rd quarter isn't even over yet and they've had two guys foul out and the US has shot 46 FTs making only about half of them!

Game. 105-42. Shaq dominated with 30 and 6 (12/12 FG and 6/6 FT).

US shot 56 FT making only 32 of them (56.7%)

Purvis played 16 mins with 6 pts (2/5 fg 2/2 ft), 3 reb, 3 assists, 4 TO, and 5 fouls.

Another rough one. Not the best sign. We need him to be game ready when the season starts. Glad he's getting this experience

from what I can tell, USA has 12 kids on the roster and all of them are getting minutes in EVERY game. In each of the two games before the Brazil game, every USA player got double-digit minutes. If this were a normal situation where there was only a 8-player rotation, Purvis' stats would look a lot better.

I dug deeper and looked at the guard vs. post player stats through the 3 games so far. It appears that the post players have an advantage because they are carrying the team. With the exception of Rasheed Sulaimon, our top 6 scorers are the big 6'8" kids.

As others have mentioned, Purvis has made his minutes count. I'd be interested to see his +/- stats. Some might argue that he is actually outperforming two of the regular starters.
