Correct. Sure, the truth is I had 3 long term relationships in there (3+ years each), and 4 years where I tore through some vag. But all she needs to know is the average.

Why do people have these conversations?

Hey, Jill, while I'm down here, tell me about the other dicks that beat me to it.

I don't care how many people she fucked as long as she didn't fuck someone an hour before I got there.

It's mostly an insecure/jealous/worried significant other. I was dating a 25 year old virgin a few years back and this question came up. I should have lied, but we probably would have broken up at some point anyways. Suffice to say, she was taken aback by my number and didn't really fall for my "explanations" as to why my number wasn't as large as it could be.

^ I disagree. I think it is a totally healthy conversation to have when you start a sexual relationship.....that is if both of you are mentally healthy and ready to handle whatever you hear.

^ What's the point in knowing? All you need to know is if they are carrying any diseases. What does any number change in the relationship?

Yeah, the difference is the purpose of the conversation. If you ask to judge, then no, it's just immature. If you ask because you want to know more about your partner, with whom you are in a serious relationship, it's a legit topic.

I'm pretty laid back and I don't have an insecure bone in my body, but the chances of two people that are in that state meeting are slim to none in my experience.

Someone list a single benefit that comes from knowing the number sexual partners your SO has had

So what exactly do you want to know more about your partner? Because all that number tells you is if they are easy or they are a prude. So essentially it does end up making you "judge" them.

I have never been in a relationship where we haven't discussed our sexual pasts at some point. Casual hook ups is different, but if you are planning a serious relationship then it just kind of goes along with "have you ever been arrested?" and "have you ever done drugs?"

Those are yes or no questions

Yes and no aren't numbers

Where they're coming from in their past. What kind of expectations or hangups they might have. Potential for STDs. Whether or not they're completely a virgin. All those things are important in a non-judgy way.

And those Yes and No answers will definitely lead to the quantifiable follow-up questions:

Yes i have been Arrested. "What for?" "How many times?"
Yes I have drugs. "What drugs? How long?"

It is all part of getting to know someone that you may spend the rest of your life with.

Ernie, please enlighten us. Are you currently single or in a relationship?

expectations and hangups don't have to do with the number of folks they've been with

potential for std's can be summed up with "have you had sex before?"

by the way, when someone you are dating tells you they were arrested in the past for assault against a female (or you found out while looking them up on the internet, whatever) - that should be a red flag. just fyi for those who can't put 2 and 2 together.

I just have nothing to hide in a relationship. I go in with full disclosure in the beginning. So I don't care what she wants to know. And if she can't deal with my answers, then we aren't going to work out anyway.

I am concerned that so many of you are upset at your SO asking you personal questions

I'm single, obviously because I don't discuss how many dudes have plowed the girl I'm interested in. If only I asked, then she would love me.

I think it's a part of the whole conversation. I don't think it's a "tell me your number" and that's it conversation. I want to know about their past. Like, have you been married before, or engaged? How often do they do the serious relationship thing. Then again, my dating experience is pretty limited, so that could be far from the norm. Just what I'd want to know before I slept with someone.

i agree with being upfront from the beginning. and from some people that involves talk of sexual experiences. other people i think just aren't interested, doesn't mean they are being dishonest.

I think that's fine. If you don't want to know, don't ask. But it shouldn't be a taboo discussion for people in long term relationships.

It's no more pointless than any other conversation you have in an LTR.

I mean, why bother asking where she grew up, what High School she went to, what her first car was, etc etc. Right?
