I'm taking the opportunity to tap into NC State's undergrad/grad photography skills. If you or a friend (or both!) are interested in shooting a wedding held in Asheboro, NC contact me at mhbyrd@ncsu.edu. It'll help if myself and the family of the groom can see your work before hiring.

When: April 21, 2012 - 2pm
How Long: Starts at 5pm, expect to be there 2pm-8pm (safe estimate)
Where: Asheboro, NC (detailed location will be provided later)
Reimbursement: Reasonable; <$370 for services, tip included
Experience: You can work that DSLR of yours and are good with human subjects/portraits.

You can contact a friend of mine: http://www.chalyn.co/

She's pretty good. But she's just starting her business so her prices are on the lower end. She will not however, be under $375 for any of her wedding packages. That's a pretty unreasonable price.

^ i'm sorry, but that was just bad. just because you have a camera doesn't mean you should start a business.

try the Digital SLR thread message_topic.aspx?topic=391741. someone in there might be interested in helping out. for reals though, that price is low for the amount of work shooting a wedding is. especially with travel. best of luck though.

^^Yeah, that's just bad. No offense, but it isn't good and even $375 is way too much for that quality. Everyone has to start somewhere, but not everyone should be "starting a business."

I'd be happy to do it, but not for $375.

She's good for cheap stuff, but she's by no means a professional yet. If the guy wants cheap, she's a place to start. I've seen some of her recent stuff, and it's actually pretty decent.

[Edited on April 5, 2012 at 8:00 PM. Reason : But yeah, I know she's not great by any means of the word.]

$375 is barely enough for the time they are there, not to mention all the work that goes into the job after the wedding itself.

Really it's more than 5 hours. You have to factor in the time and gas to get to and from Asheboro. Then figure in time for basic Photoshop editing (color balance etc). I'd say for a standard wedding, which I take to be four hour reception, two hours for ceremony and getting ready for the ceremony, the driving, subtract what you spent on gas, the editing, and if the person is smart spending about an hour interviewing you to understand what you're looking for and going over their portfolio, you might get about $25/hour. Not a terrible wage for an amateur but I couldn't see many pros going for that.

I mean if it were me, and the photography wasn't that important to me, I'd just let my guests go loose with disposables than give money to someone who potentially will take just as bad of photos as your guests and very possibly could just take your money and not give you any pictures in return. Seems like all the sad stories you hear from brides is when they just hired some random person off the street that has no business reputation.

Of all the things to skimp on at the wedding, you're skimping on the photographer?

Might as well get your wedding cake from Harris Teeter while you're at it

FYI: My sister paid about that for her wedding and ended up only getting 3. The person was horrible and missed so much. There wasn't a lot to salvage. My husband's cousin went and took photos. She does it as a hobby and my sister straight up used her photos instead.

I paid 200 + prints for someone who had references (studio type work), but I had to release all my photos so he could use them for advertising. I was really happy.

Do a lot of research on the person and talk to their references!

Wow.

So at least 3 hours of travel of time, gas/vehicle expenses, 5+ hours of shooting, plus whatever time is required before and after the shoot, for $370? Good luck. You're gonna get what you pay for.

lol, wow.

just buy a bunch of disposal cameras if you care that little. $370 for someone to do it will result in disaster.

And the wedding starts at 5pm and you expect everything to be over at 8pm? Must not be having much of a reception. I feel sorry for your guests.

I used to work with a girl that had a similar sad story. The really messed up part was the guy was a newspaper photographer and "cutting her a deal". She paid something like $1000 and in return got absolute garbage. Maybe five photos were decent? She said she cried when she finally received the DVD from the guy, after harassing him for months, and then had to beg guests for their photos.

And now that I think about it another friend of mine had a similar story. Her aunt is a newspaper photographer that has won some awards for her work and offered to do their wedding for free. But all she really took were the standard formal poses of the family and a handful of candid shots, most of which were out of focus or just poorly framed. No pictures of the cake, reception decor, all the little details my friend put a lot of work into and any wedding photographer knows to get pictures of. She said if she had it to do over again she would have just hired a photographer and not had her aunt working her wedding.

So the moral of these stories is don't hire newspaper photographers to shoot your wedding
