I'd like to swap a 5.9L Cummins in there...

haha... With the multifuel, probably around 8-10mpg combined. Maybe 10 city, closer to 7 or 8 hwy. (unladen). Top speed is about 55mph

I'm curious if swapping a Cummins would help improve mileage (30%-50%) while adding power.

m35 a3 has the best engine but no longer has a manual

When talking about a truck this big, mileage is generally not a consideration. The M35 sometimes can be found with a multi-fuel cummins engine instead of the continental (unless you can find a "whistler turbo" continental).

The M35A3 had the 3116 Cat, but they are much more expensive. The 3116 is an amazing motor, however does not seem to be a ton more powerful than the M35A2 (I have ridden in both).

You can find a normal 6x6 M35A2 at a local yard in VA for around $2500 in running/driving shape.

that's primarily a gearing issue.

i can tell you this... my 200hp wrangler didn't like going 85 and it has probably 1/4 the drag and weight of this thing.

^Probably 1/8th of the torque as well. 126hp aint spinning any tires, but these engines likely have well over 500lbft of torque.

Still would take a looooooonnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg time to get past 55 with the right gears though.

HA! no 85 mph without upping the boost etc.

and that's with a conservative rolling resistance and Cd.

1/8 of 500 lb ft is 62.5 lb ft of torque.
Unless these things are making 1800 lb ft. of torque your "1/8th comparison" is way off for a I-6 powered TJ Wrangler.

lol... if you had a winch and a tilt bed you could put a boat in the back and tow another.

and seriously... might as well get the 5 ton... they have better engine options anyway.

5 Ton definitely requires CDL, hence the 2.5 ton is a popular option.

The truck in the first post is probably marked up between $2000 and $4000 over what was paid for it as surplus, and the guy who bobbed it probably sold the extra axle for at least $1500. Also I don't see what year it was overhauled? Usually that is a selling point as well.

Last night while I was riding on my motorcycle, I spotted a Duece parked on a side street in front of a house off Glenwood Ave.

Oh god I can't stop shopping for them...

i would love to have a deuce. I just have no good place to keep it and no real use for it. it's just a matter of wanting one.

hell, it'll burn used motor oil, heating oil, ATF, discarded fryer grease from the landfill, you name it.

my 5 ton has an ass of torque, you can start unloaded in any gear in low range and the first two in high. It gets about 5mpg. Its less like a truck and more like a tractor with a bench seat, damn near scary to get wound up because of how spartan it is, especially with the top off. The rear tandems are like a slinky when going over obstacles. If you get a five ton you automatically get power steering and air over hydraulic brakes. It is a 50s style truck no matter how you look at it but it sure is fun to drive. Just wear ear plugs, that bitch is loud.

^^^^^ the 5-ton is just a different, larger military truck. There are 7-tons, too. The deuce is popular becuase it's plentiful, dirt cheap, and a little less unwieldy than the larger ones.

^ everybody would rather have a 'Mog, and the price difference reflects that!
