I have a new invention proposal that's probably already been done, but maybe you can find it for me.
Looking at this picture:
and looking around me, I came to the conclusion that this piece of shit architecture doesn't stand a chance against a storm like that.
So my invention proposal is a photobooth sized steel room, that is lockable from the inside and ranges in the $3,999 - $5,999 zone
Simple Box shape and thickness as this http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/images/winchester_safes/desc_HOMESERIES12.jpg
Equipped with an oxygen tank, and a flat panel tv with games and access to cameras placed on each side to see outside the box, and padding on the walls
Therefore, if the building ever collapses, or a tornado picks you up and throws you, a hurricane rattles your house, or a tsunami is imminent, you can run to your box to protect yourself for 1-24 hours until you're out of danger 4/14/2012 4:41:05 PM |

They already sell concrete storm shelters that you bury in the back yard or under the house. They are bigger than photo booths and about the price you quoted. 4/14/2012 4:45:52 PM |

Ok I'm sitting in a refrigerator 100 feet in the air and then it falls straight down, seems like this could be bad for me
Not to mention when the flat panel tv screen explodes on impact and gets glass all in my eyes 4/14/2012 5:15:36 PM |

I can't see a safe of that size flying too high, i just see it tumbling along the ground.
There is a difference between a truck flying 100 feet into the air and a solid safe flying 100 feet into the air. Right? I don't know the physics of it, but I would assume it's based on principals of lift. 4/14/2012 5:26:30 PM |

Just because it's not standard in house design doesn't mean it's a new "invention" or unheard of.
Also, you'd need a mighty big air tank to have a 24 hour supply... and oxygen tanks probably will explode if they're tossed around or exposed to heat. Just fyi.4/14/2012 7:43:05 PM |

Who is brave enough to show through math and physics what wind speed it would take raise a 1200 lb 6x6x6' square into the air 100'? 4/14/2012 10:07:12 PM |
jaZon All American 27048 Posts user info edit post |
You going to build your house around this thing? I doubt many houses are going to support a fucking 1200lb box with a 36sqft footprint
Could definitely be wrong about that
But I'd also imagine the thing would weigh way more than 1200lbs

I'm inclined to believe that if a tornado can throw a 3,500 lb car into the air, that it can also throw a 1,200 lb box into the air.
From the tornadoproject:
Quote : | "What is the heaviest thing a tornado has ever picked up? The Pampa, Texas tornado moved machinery that weighted more that 30,000 pounds. Whether it was slid or picked up, we don't know. A tornado would certainly have no trouble tossing a 2000 -3000 pound van into the air. That has been caught on video. Freight cars are often blown sideways from their tracks. In the huge cleanup after a tornado, no one bothers weighing the debris, so there is no record kept of heavy flying objects, other than cars." |

Unless your anchored to the foundation about 80mph on a flat 36sq foot side would be enough to tip the thing. And it would hurt like a bitch if you were in that when it happened. If you'd like to test why being in in a big metal box thats rolling around would suck, I suggest finding a large barrel/trash can, climb in it, and have a 'friend' push you down a hill. 4/14/2012 10:25:47 PM |

At the risk of sounding like I'm trying to derail this batshit insane thread with talk of actual life events, I saw Panic Room at Southpoint right after it opened and this super duper old couple was watching it behind me. For future reference, Twilight's Kristen Fownyface Stewart played the daughter in Panic Room. Anyway, about ten minutes before it was over, this fucking fossil sitting behind me screams "IS THAT A GIRL?!?" after she's been in a camisole for the previous hour and how ever many minutes.

jazon, they typically don't build basements here in virginia beach. With global warming and bigger, deadlier storms appearing every year, it seems it would be wise to take action now instead of wait for disaster. There were a few very close calls with tornados last summer and I had nowhere safe to run. 4/14/2012 10:38:45 PM |
