In Theaters August 10

Quote :
"When long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center.

At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors' support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family's political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about.

As election day closes in, the two are locked in a dead heat, with insults quickly escalating to injury until all they care about is burying each other, in this mud-slinging, back-stabbing, home-wrecking comedy from "Meet the Parents" director Jay Roach that takes today's political circus to its logical next level. Because even when you think campaign ethics have hit rock bottom, there's room to dig a whole lot deeper."

This was formerly titled Dog Fight and Rivals

So, in other words, this is Parks and Recreation: Season 4: The Movie?

^^^ I was just commenting that the plot is remotely similar to the major story arc in this latest season of parks and rec. Complete coincidence I know.

There's not any similarity beyond it being an election, a plot device that's existed for much longer than Parks & Rec.

I was really just making a joke. I wasn't saying it was a knockoff since it is a pretty generic plot anyway (not in a bad way). However, it's definitely incorrect to say "There's not any similarity beyond it being an election."

This paragraph, paraphrased from this exact movie synopsis, describes the Parks and Rec story arc pretty accurately:

A career government worker running for office is faced by a naive opponent who is only there because of wealthy backers. A cutthroat campaign manager, money, and family's political connections makes the naive opponent an actual contender vs the charismatic government worker with real experience. As election day closes in, the two are locked in a dead heat

I thought it was funny...mostly because of the subtle jabs at small town, NC

just got back from seeing it. it was ok, definitely not as funny as people make it out to be. really heavy on the gratuitous language too (not that that bothers me at all, but it was overkill IMO).

I wasnt really a fan at all.

the best part was the honest dinner table.

its very predictable and a SHORT film, when it got over I was like...thats it?

Id give it a C. I wouldnt go see it in theatres just wait till its on redbox.

yeah, other than in name, they pretty much ignored everything about down east nc and substituted mississippi/louisiana

Because Louisiana gives *insane* tax breaks to have films filmed there. NC used to be super competitive. There was a time when ILM was Hollywood East in a lot of ways, but those days are over. All things considered, it's way cheaper to film in Louisiana than in NC. That's why it was such a huge deal / shocker to get Iron Man 3 here -- we made some special exceptions (in the form of tax breaks) to get that movie, but 15 years ago, the exceptions were the rule.

I saw an original trailer with Will Ferrell punching a baby but some more recent one where he punches a little dog. Do both things happen or did they change it in the movie because punching a baby is too bad for publicity?

^[SPOILER]

Though spoiling a minor part of a comedy is not really a spoiler...he punches both. He's a angry, angry man.

You do realize last year was the biggest year ever for the movie studios in Wilmington, and this year will surpass it? I believe it still holds the distinction as the #3 spot in the country for filmmaking (outside NY and Los Angeles).

The first half was much funnier than the second half. I felt like a lot of the good lines from the trailers were cut out; or maybe I just don't remember hearing them. I'd say it's worth a viewing at the $2.00 theater at least, or wait for it to come on netflix/rentals.

Overall, I was disappointed because I had higher expectations. I give it a 5.5/10.

It was ok. Best part was the dinner table scene. I wouldn't have paid to see it, but my mom treated.

It was only ok. It was actually filthier than I expected. Actually, I guess I didn't expect all the filth from Ferrell vs. Galifinakis.

Ultimately this was just an excuse for Galifinakis to play this character that he's been doing since forever.
