Montreal, 26/05/2012. Estimates at 500,000 in the middle of the day. It's being called "the largest act of civil disobedience in Canadian history" to protest arguably the most anti-freedom bill ever introduced Bill 78.

MEXICO CITY—Thousands of students are joining a growing street-demonstration movement to protest Mexico's top two television networks, which they accuse of colluding to secure the leading presidential candidate's election this summer.
Across the capital, as well as several other cities, university students in recent days have rallied against what they say is an effort by the country's television duopoly—Grupo Televisa SAB and TV Azteca SAB—to back the candidate of Mexico's former ruling party.
The Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, ruled Mexico with a velvet hand and an iron fist for 71 years until it was voted out of power in 2006

Quote : | "MEXICO CITY -- Thousands of university students poured into the streets of Mexico City on Wednesday for the second time in a week to protest the way the upcoming presidential election is being run and, more specifically, covered in the Mexican media.
They are especially incensed that victory by Enrique Peña Nieto on July 1 is often portrayed as a fait accompli. About 15,000 (by city officials' count) people gathered at the controversial Pillar of Light monument (seen by many here as a government boondoggle) and marched down the iconic Reforma Boulevard.
They stopped outside the headquarters of the giant Televisa broadcasting network to demand fairer and more pluralistic TV news. "We are not one, we are not 100. Televisa, count us!" some chanted.
The protesters came from a wide range of universities: public, private, leftist, rightist, Catholic. And while many were decidedly anti-Peña Nieto -- made clear in their banners and signs -- the protest appears to go beyond pure partisan politics and represent a broader questioning of Mexico's status quo.
Television and newspaper media are concentrated in a few hands in Mexico, and many of the demonstrators believe they are skewed in favor of Peña Nieto and the return to presidential power of his Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI. The PRI ruled single-handedly for seven decades until being ousted in 2000.
A feeling of being left out and a general disillusionment with a system long plagued by corruption had led many of Mexico's young voters to sit out this campaign. Wednesday's protest, and another one over the weekend, may not be enough to turn the tide, but the movement is attracting attention.
“The real miracle is that a complete generation that was condemned to apathy, to only observe, and to individualism is once again making the nation's destiny their own," said Mexican writer Paco Ignacio Taibo II, who attended Wednesday's march.
“I came here to ask for transparency in the media," said Chloe Nava, a student from Panamerican University. "It seems we need to rescue that instinct as citizens."
The protests were galvanized by a visit Peña Nieto made this month to the elite Ibero-American University in Mexico City. Students there heckled him and he had to cut the visit short -- unusual because his campaign appearances are typically highly choreographed. Media coverage, however, gave the incident short shrift, at least in the view of the youths, and Peña Nieto's campaign dismissed it, claiming the protesters were political plants and not students at all.
In reaction, 131 Ibero students went on YouTube to prove they were in fact students and had participated in attempting to shout down the candidate. Now the protest movement is calling itself "I am 132," meaning everyone joins the group of 131.
Plans are in the works for additional demonstrations, members say." |

The tuitions in quebec basically didn't change for 28 years. Some of the money earmarked for education basically got stolen by another arm of the government as well. The state politicians are sure making themselves look like fools as a result.
My kneejerk reaction is that paying something keeps people focused on finishing, and the rest of North America is paying tuition for education for the most part, and the schools aren't as dysfunctional elsewhere (seems like the teachers or maintenance staff or students are striking every semester, these people CANNOT get contracts signed on time). But obvz I paid to go to NC state and didn't grow up thinking "free" education was my birthright. I do think the world would be better if more people were educated.
There's just too many people taking advantage of the system and not contributing the fruit of education to society. I know somebody that is signing up for classes and not going to get access to the swimming pool and psychologist, and a governmental grant of $8k a year. There's a lot of people crippling the system at both ends.

More than 400,000 filled the streets of Montreal this week as a protest over a 75% increase in tuition has grown into a full-blown political crisis.
After three months of sustained protests and class boycotts that have come to be known around the world as the "Maple Spring,"
the dispute exploded when the Quebec government passed an emergency law known as Bill 78, which suspends the current academic term, requires demonstrators to inform police of any protest route involving 50 or more people, and threatens student associations with fines of up to $125,000 if they disobey.
The strike has received growing international attention as the standoff grows, striking a chord with young people across the globe amid growing discontent over austerity measures, bleak economies and crushing student debt.
As you can see, this has nothing to do with Quebec wanting out of Canada. .

Instead of creating a new thread, I'll post this here. This is about Mexico. It's being passed around on FB. just read it and be aware of it. I do not take responsibility for the accuracy of the data, I'm just transmitting the message so people are aware of the information being passed around.
A comrade from Mexico sent us this message, we repost it :
"Hello, could you please share this information about what is going on in Mexico...this is all about corruption and how politician´s treating their nation. In Mexico will be a huge protest very soon but the television is saying nothing about what is going on there. This is not the first time that this happened in Mexico and government will be using violence. But if we spread this message all over the world they can´ t do that. This is very important.
facts: pre election's day:
pro PRI .( allegedly winning party) supporters began a campaign around the country to buy the poorest mexican's citizens votes.
elections day (july 1st 2012)
PRI, enrique pena nieto supporters (winning candidate because of the most retarded scam in world's history) supporters were positioned all over the country to intimidate voters from other parties' supporters. also these scum bags use the police against people who were against them by incarcerating them, or by giving them money, cell phones etc etc etc. for their vote.
also these wastes of life after the elections were over stole the elections packages were the people casted their vote. these packages were burned . in addition, in several voting sites, people were not even allowed to cast their vote because for "unknown reasons" (the worst scam in mexican history and the most retarded one and obvious one, even for the lower classes) there were enough ballots for them. my fucking ass is white, and im black.
post election's day, hours after the end of the elections (july 1st 2012)
after the presidential elections ended ( 5pm ) only few hours after (considering that in a nation of 110 million inhabitants, millions of votes cant be counted that fast) only few hours after opposing candidates (part of the scam) PAN (jvm, josefina vazquez mota) Alianza ciudadana (gabriel quadri) accepted their loss for becoming mexico's next president. Felipe calderon (mexico's current president, of course totally corrupted as the entire government) without having official information (for obvious reasons, come'on the elections finished hours ago) declared PRI's candidate enrique pena nieto as the new "elected' mexican president 7/7/2012 8:32:31 PM |

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Thousands of protesters marched through the Mexican capital on Saturday against President-elect Enrique Pena Nieto, accusing him of buying votes and paying off TV networks for support.
The demonstrators, including students, leftists, anarchists and union members, shouted slogans criticizing Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, and the electoral authority.
Pena Nieto won Sunday's election by almost 7 percentage points, according to the official count, returning the PRI to presidential power after 12 years in the wilderness.
The PRI previously ruled Mexico for seven decades, during which time it was accused of rigging elections and repressing protesters.
"The PRI threatens many people and buys others with a couple of tacos," said Manuel Ocegueda, a 43-year-old shop worker participating in the march.
Pena Nieto is due to take power in December, replacing Felipe Calderon of the conservative National Action Party, or PAN.
The constitution barred Calderon from running for a second term. The PAN candidate, Josefina Vazquez Mota, finished third, with many voters dissatisfied over relentless drug violence and sluggish growth.
Leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador finished in second place, but has refused to concede, accusing Pena Nieto of stealing the presidency.
Pena Nieto denies any wrongdoing and PRI officials say they could sue Lopez Obrador over the accusations.
Lopez Obrador was runner-up as well in the 2006 presidential race, but by a much closer margin, after which he also said there had been fraud and led major protests.
He has so far stayed away from protests this year, but said he was collecting evidence of fraud to give to officials.
On Saturday, Lopez Obrador called on the PAN to join forces with him to file a legal challenge to the election.
Mexico's electoral tribunal has until September to evaluate any complaints and officially name Pena Nieto as the next Mexican president.
Pena Nieto, 45, a former state governor, promises to reform Mexico's oil industry and labor laws to kick-start growth and boost security spending to reduce the country's high murder rate.
Calderon has congratulated Pena Nieto on his electoral victory, along with dozens of world leaders.

The person that the people elect should be the person that won.
There is no reason for protests of this magnitude if the majority of the people really wanted the candidate that was just elected as the winner.

the simple point that geniusboy is trying to make i think is this:
X number of people "vote" for one guy, and he wins.
then Y number of people protest afterwards that he didnt win, their guy did.
X < Y, so therefore election = rigged.

Are you asserting that 100% of the voting population votes?
here's an even better question.
Many candidates in the past have lost election. Have you even gotten angry enough or convinced enough to protest the legitimacy of a presidency?
If the answer is no, then you have some explaining to do for why all the people above feel like it.
