^The new ones do. The slighly older ones do with the right adaptors. The older ones don't at all. It all depends on what model mini you have.

But the OP is a dumbass, so of course he didn't bother giving out that info. He's also a festering asshole, which is why I didn't bother inquiring for more info.

It's mid 2010. You don't need toslink or anything like that. If you've got an AV Receiver, getting your mac mini hdmi hooked up to the AV receiver will not yield 5.1 surround. So all you have to do is set your audio midi setup to 48000 Hz at 2 channels. This will place the burden of distributing sound to the AV Receiver instead of your mac mini.

5.1 now works. All I have to do now is get two more speaks and we've got it made at 7.1.

If I'm not mistaken this is NOT what you want. You want the mac mini to send a true surround signal to the receiver NOT let the receiver do Dolby Logic on a stereo signal to make it surround.

It's not real surround though. It's your receiver mimicking surround by splitting a stereo signal into surround using Dolby Pro Logic.

The receiver should just take a straight signal from the Mac Mini. If you see any kind of "pro logic" on the receiver you're doing something wrong.

If it's not doing it automatically when you hook the digital out to the digital in of your sound system, (or HDMI to whatever) try the Audi MIDI Setup utility in your applications/utilities folder.

BTW, if you're not using HDMI, you do still need a TOSLink cable, you just also need the mini plug adapter for it (http://www.amazon.com/Toslink-Female-Mini-Plug-Male-Adapter/dp/B000FMM8TO). The audio out on the back of your computer is a combined analog / digital out.

The HDMI cable can take the data, but still searching for a way to set the Midi utility just right. '

I know that for some of you, it just works, but I'm not experiencing the same thing here.

Alright, this is where I'm at. The movies work well in 5.1, but the music does not play out in 5.1 except in the discussed settings previously mentioned.

Is this an iTunes problem? or do I need to make it work through the mac mini? The AV Receiver is doing what it's told, the problem is getting the Mac mini to do the telling.

Ideas?

Music isn't 5.1, it's stereo. Either use a 5channel stereo setting on your receiver or do what you were doing before on the mac.

Azaka is correct. The AV Receiver can decode the data to where it needs to go, but it's not true surround, actually, none of it is true surround. Gotta figure this one for the books.

After a lot of research and experimenting, I think the best settings are to place your audio midi setup at 2 channel 24 bit at 192 kHz. Your mini and receiver should be able to handle it. Then let the receiver decode the 2 channel into where it should go.

Again not true surround, but at the same time, it's pretty decent.

Got it to work!

After a lot more research, I found that someone had already solved the problem for me. It's a program called Perian that is no longer supported but pretty much allows for output for 5.1 with both music and video without a lot of complicated steps. It's open source for anyone who wants to pick up where these guys left off.

I've been enjoying my music in 5.1 TRUE surround sound in Dolby Pro Logic II all night.

So awesome...

You do realize apocalypse that pro logic is NOT full surround sound?

To get surround sound out of your Mac, you need video files with ac3 encoded audio and then you must enable ac3 pass through in Perian/Vlc.

Or alternatively, get a surround sounds receiver with AAC decoding (a fairly new feature) and get movie files with 5.1 AAC audio (like from iTunes).

DVDs are ac3 audio if you rip them, you can almost always find bluray rips with ac3 audio or 5.1 AAC. To my knowledge, there is no Mac audio app that will transcode non ac3 n.1 sources to ac3 n.1.
