I want to go look at a used Subaru Outback, but I need someone who knows what to look for in a quality used car and what questions to ask the dealer. I'd like to go early tomorrow (Saturday June 9th) morning and it's in Burlington. I can provide transportation, breakfast (as well as lunch if need be) as well as $50 (can negotiate) for your time and expertise.

Just shoot me a PM if interested or post here. Thanks.

We got one for my GF last year and that thing will go almost anywhere! Best car for the snow(Live out west now) IMO and it is great if you got dogs!

hell, there aint much to look for except headgaskets on those cars.

and of course other general maintenance.

make sure AWD system is good. no mis-matched tires that are way off

I went there looking at a 2007 Outback, but it was already sold. Instead, I fell in love with a 2009 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport that had a staggering total of 23,500 miles.
It looks exactly like this one but mine has the roof rack. Same color as well.

How long before that headgasket issue manifests itself?

not to highjack the thread or anything, but this looks like it might be interesting to someone that has the knowledge

"1999 Subaru Forester - $1500 (Durham)

Here's the deal. We purchased a used Subaru abotu 4 months ago and noticed it was losing power. My father took it to a Subaru mechanic and we were advised that it needed a new head gasket.
They quoted $1,200 for new head gaskets and $2,500 for a used engine. I don't even know if that is fair or not.
The car RUNS AND DRIVES... but I wouldn't drive it more than 20 miles for fear that it will completely lock up. Other than the head gasket the car is in pretty good shape.
It has about 190,000 miles and seems to have been well cared for. I am not going to claim that this car is in great shape. You will have to judge for yourself.
We need to unload this car in a hurry so that we can buy a new vehicle for the family.
Fix it, Part it out, or turn it into an expensive piece of yard art. I have been told that it needs to go.
Email me any questions and I will do my best to answer them."

just to be clear, it's not mine. I'd buy it if I was sure I could fix it, though

^^ not sure if you're around Raleigh or not, but there's one that looks just like that at Johnson subaru in the Autopark. they want way too much for it though

I turned down that Legacy. Now I'm trying to get into a Manheim auction through a dealer I used to work for

You're right. They do want way too much for those. I didn't pay anywhere near that much, but I bought mine in Burlington.
