I am looking to pick one up since the girls I've dated always complain about my bed being too firm.

I have read a lot of reviews in both directions. There seems to be a lot of negative reviews on some sites, but I attribute that to the fact that most people that are content won't waste their time writing a review about it whereas people love to rant their negativities.

I went in store and priced the p5 bed for ~$2100 and then found a couple listings on craigslist for the bed new in box for ~$1250. Thoughts?

that's saying a lot since I am a frugal sonofabitch

My parents have one, and they seem to like it. I've never researched the technology or slept on one, but just from sitting on it I get the impression that it's just like a series of small blow-up pillows. I like my mattress firm, so I have a hard time imagining being able to get that same feeling from that kind of setup.

I have had problems sleeping through the night for years. I would often wake up in the morning with back aches. I tried just about everything. Soft matresses, firm matresses, even a Tempur Pedic (worst night sleep of my life). We finally went all in and bought an air matress bed. I did NOT want to spend the money for the sleep number brand. I finally went with the bed linked below. It is bad ass. Well worth every freakin penny, and you'll pay over $4000 for a comparable sleep number.

I've got a few friends that have them. From the limited info I've gathered, as long as you go with something other than the bottom line mattress, it should be fine. Apparently the bottom line sleep number bed doesn't even have the gadget that shows you what number you have set the bed to. It only has a firmer/softer button. And it has a hard time holding it's firmness for more than a night or two so you always have to reset it. But with no numbers, it's pretty much a guessing game until you get it right each time.

But of the people I know who have the higher models, they love them and don't have issues with them

I can't speak for the higher end ones, but I can echo the comments to stay away from their lower end ones. We had one and it was horrible. Not having the numbers didn't matter much but it wasn't comfortable except on the firmest settings because it's just a single chamber of air so any softer and you're just sinking in a pit. Also, if be sure that you and your other have similar tastes in firmness. Basically the two sides are separated by a simple foam divider, and if your comfort levels are too far apart, if you roll to one side or the other, it's like rolling over a cliff.

Had one for a while in college. I thought it was OK. Wife hated it. And I couldn't really convince her otherwise after we woke up one morning and her side had deflated.

^that kind of thing is what will prevent me from ever spending more than $20 on an blow up mattress, especially something i'd be sleeping on every night. i'd just be too paranoid.

^If you want an extra bed for your house for when company comes over, spending the extra money on an aerobed is worth it.

In my experience, real aerobeds stay pumped up much longer and are more comfortable than a cheap coleman or whatever walmart brand you might get for 20 bucks.

we have a guest room with a real mattress. we gave up blow up mattresses for camping in favor of the thermarest type a while back too. when i said blow up mattress before, i was really referring to sleep number beds, but i kinda lump them into the same category with all the other air mattresses. i've never gotten a good night's sleep on any type of air mattress. that's just me though. lots of other folks have i'm sure. i personally will never buy anything besides foam after our last mattress purchase (even though it's hot).

We have a Sleep Number bed. Got it in May 2011. I can't remember what model we got but I think it was one of the top models. I believe we got it during their Memorial Day sale so we got a pretty nice discount on it. We upgraded and got the FlexFit adjustable base. You can raise the head and foot of the bed so you can easily read in bed or watch TV. We have a queen and the only complaint I have is that its one base for the queen. So both sides have to raise up. If you get the king, the base is split so it allows you to adjust each side seperately.

I'm thinking about getting a memory foam mattress.

Does anyone have one? What kind, how much $, and what do you think?

We have a sleep number bed, because my wife likes a soft bed, and I like a firmer bed, and were both polarized enough that there isn't really a good compromise, so short of sleeping in separate beds we got a sleepnumber bed 6 years ago. No complaints except it was expensive.

I hated the tempurpedic beds. I'm hot natured as it is, and i felt like i was trying to sleep on a giant heating pad. some people love them. people are different, so it's a matter of knowing what's going to give you the best night's sleep, and for most people who've lived their whole lives sleeping on whatever's available, that's tough.

There is a brand of mattresses you can get at most mattress places where you can select different firmness for each side, they even have a IR camera setup thing to recommend what your preference is. I can't remember the name but remember seeing it at Fred's Beds.

We have this one from Costco http://www.costco.com/Novaform®-Serafina-Gel-Cal-King-Memory-Foam-Mattress.product.11678262.html

We love it. We went and tried various mattresses at several mattress stores to determine what kind of firmness we wanted and then bought from Costco to save some $. If we didn't buy from costco, we were really liking the icomfort series, although some of the longterm reviews of those are iffy.

We were kinda nervous ordering a mattress we had never laid on, but it worked out great. The first mattress we ordered from Costco turned out to be too firm for us. So we called them up and they sent out some guys with a moving truck to pick it up and refunded our money no questions asked. So we ordered the mattress in the link above as it was described as being slightly less firm than the first one and we loved it.

I wasn't a huge proponent of memory foam mattresses before having slept on some friends' Tempurpedics and practically sweating to death on them. But I really like the gel-infused ones and I don't sweat anymore than I did with a regular mattress. And I'm a fairly big dude at 6' 250lbs.

just get a plush or pillow top. no need to drop thousands of dollars on mattresses, unless you have real problems.
