The idea: they made an app that gives points for saving energy on things.
In case you might miss the big R-line line in the middle of the video, yes, this is a local Raleigh kind of effort. You probably know people who are into this kind of stuff, or at least might try to do it... and compare points on this game that you probably won't be convinced to play yourself.
It makes me think of Klout. I think xkcd immortalized the problem with Klout pretty well
I think this really gets to the core point, that gamification is annoying to most people. If it has points, it probably gets on someone's nerves. Somehow this idea of getting points for taking shorter showers is both shamefully hipster and dorky at the same time. But then again, maybe the more haters they have, the better. We all became addicted to Facebook while at the same time feeling very bad about it deep down. 7/16/2012 10:51:48 AM |

I think any type of point system that doesn't result in direct monetary or sexual gain is destined to fail. Sure, you'll have the competitive types who get into it initially, but like Klout, Xbox gamerscore, and TWW post count, it will ultimately prove meaningless to those who have even a modicum of gumption for things that actually matter. 7/16/2012 11:08:19 AM |

Simple Energy is a startup that does something (sort of) like this as well.

it's not hipster, Klout evaluates your "reach" through Twitter and that sort of thing. Why?

I was pretending to be the app. The app was mad because the user is destroying the Earth. 7/16/2012 3:07:08 PM |
