Holy shit. I want one. I usually don't buy into Kickstarter stuff, but with the industry support this thing has and its specs I'm sorely tempted. I can just imagine playing a good MMO on this hardware, it would be amazing. 8/2/2012 5:01:30 AM |

I agree, pretty awesome, and from the video it looks like he has support from every single major game studio ... but be aware this is what you'll actually be getting in the Developer Kit:
http://www.slashgear.com/early-oculus-rift-prototype-revealed-31241081
The picture on the Kickstarter page is purely their rendering of an anticipated consumer version, me thinks. You can see him assembling something like this in the video.
I'm greatly looking forward to higher resolution, lighter weight, and oh, how am I supposed to see my keyboard with this thing on??

I really don't get why. I don't see where this fits into facebooks strategy. Unless zuckerberg just liked it and is like fuck I can buy the whole company instead of a headset.
Or Facebook is trying to spread horizontally in an effort to not be pigeon holed. Its just an odd acquisition. 3/25/2014 8:31:56 PM |

This is probably the best thing to happen to Oculus. They'll finally have the resources they need to make a great project.
Here's hoping they can add another 20ยบ FOV.

I got my rift in the mail the other day. Selling it sealed in box. Planned on using it, but my friend got his first and there isn't a compelling reason for both of us to have one yet.
Makes me motion sick, and I don't get motion sick from cars or boats. They have some things to fix. When you get into the virtual world though, it is pretty awesome. Very cool to be in that environment and immerse yourself.
This thing definitely has a future but there are things that hopefully developers can fix with regard to motion sickness. My fear is that the motion sickness is caused by our bodies and not from the Oculus. If my eyes tell my brain I am moving and I am not, I think my body tells my brain something is wrong and causes the sickness. Not sure if anything can be done about that. 11/30/2014 12:03:45 PM |

with the rift I believe it can take a bit of adjusting all of the settings to get it to where some people don't feel sick. 11/30/2014 1:54:45 PM |

^^i bet if you used it regularly for a few weeks (probably no more than a month at absolute most) you'd adapt perfectly to it
also, i wonder if the motion sickness has anything to do with the latency of the head tracking

This is the cause of all motion sickness, a disconnect between different sensory systems. Nutmeg is supposed to help with this. All vr helmets will have this problem for people susceptible to motion sickness, and it is something you can get used to.
For 3D displays, it's often caused by convergence and accommodation issues (where your eyes are pointing, and what they are focused on). Until vr helmets can have dynamic focal ranges that respond to eye/pupil motion (combine lytros tech with an eye tracker), or are holographic, they'll never be perfect.
The screen door burn in on the retina is a bigger problem, but I suspect off setting the panels could fix this.
^^^How much does a occulus kit go for though? Is this the most recent one?

They were selling in Tokyo last week for ~700USD.
I got motion sickness initially too, from the awful screen-door effect. Bought a matte screen protector, put it on the note4 display inside and the screen-door effect disappeared along with my slight nausea.
Fucking love this thing. The resolution is still too low, I pray to god that the consumer version will release with a 4k display. That's honestly the minimum bar for usable, comparable to a display, VR.
Even with the still-too-low resolution, I got it playing the new Grid autosport game, and holy hell. That, Alien Isolation, and Elite: Dangerous are all INCREDIBLY immersive VR experiences you can have right now.
I just got my Logitech G27 steering wheel over Black Friday. Going to start building a cockpit chassis with a sim-craft DIY kit sometime in the spring. Hopefully the Control-VR kickstarter will ship by the time I'm done building it. I'm 100% bought in to VR. 12/1/2014 2:44:33 AM |

I can honestly say that I use it every day...I play a lot of Live For Speed online doing tandem drifting and its incredible how much better i am with the oculus on. I can judge distance well and have the car sideways well before the turn and weave it through really small areas with ease. You can look into the drift or turn and its all just like the real thing (i have a drift car and its almost set up exactly like my PC car) wish the resolution was a little better but I still use the hell out of it, recently started playing TF2 with the oculus and thats amazing as well! 1/16/2015 8:53:54 AM |

So wait the Oculus resolution is still only 2160 x 1200 (same as Vive)? My Gear GR uses a 2560 by 1440 screen and it's already pretty pixelated. I can't imagine going lower than that. I know all the other advantages I was just hoping for a 4k display so I'm not staring at magnified pixels all day. 1/6/2016 3:31:07 PM |

Games are pretty cool as long as you're moving most of the time but the minute you put on a movie or netflix and try to watch it it's very pixelated. Looks like you're sitting 2 feet from a CRT and watching it. 1/6/2016 4:14:44 PM |

Ugh I've been debating getting one. Do either of you have the Gear VR? How is it compared to that in terms of perceived resolution and the screen door effect? The resolution is technically higher on the Gear VR with my Note 5 than a Vive or Oculus but the screen door effect is much less on the later. I want to get one but am hesitant if it's going to look as poor as the (still fun) gear vr. 6/27/2016 8:34:52 PM |

Never tried the gear vr. Screen door effect stood out to me at first, mostly on white backdrops... now I absolutely don't notice it. It really is a transport to another world. Full room scale is insane and the controls are ridiculously well done.6/29/2016 2:48:19 PM |

I went with the Rift and 100 oculus store credit. I think the Vive was a straight 100 off. So far it's pretty cool I can't really use Virtual Desktop as a PC monitor because of how awful text looks, but BlazeRush is pretty fun and the content in that Within app was neat -- A One Republic music video and the Mr Robot short. I also watched Westworld using the virtual desktop home cinema experience and it was a lot better than I thought it would be. 11/29/2016 7:46:57 PM |
