This movie will be fucking epic. DDL is an incredible actor, up there with the greatest of all time. Steven Speilbergo, his non-union mexican counter part, is also a good director and i prefer his serious films.

Basically, this movie will be epic. they would all have to go out of their way to try and make this bad, everyone doping their status quo would still make this movie epic.

Abraham Lincoln is single-handedly responsible for more american deaths (both union and confederate) than any other president in history.

he was a butcher and employed military brutality before even thinking about sitting down at a negotiation table.

Then as the war was coming to an end and his raging ego decided he wanted history to think he was a great guy so he "OMFG lets free the slaves lol"

and you people worship him.

Well obviously a war between AMERICANS is gonna end in high American casualties. I'm sure the next civil war will have a higher death toll...

So is this based on one particular biography (a la HBO's John Adams being sourced on David McCullough's pulitzer-winning bio) or drawn from multiple sources?

Looks quite good either way. Especially considering that, as I'm going to move to Richmond within the next couple months, I'll be right in the middle of a bunch of Civil War history. Plan to start reading more of that.

I do wonder if they will touch on his shortcomings, such as:

suspending the writ of habeas corpus
limiting freedom of speech and press
demanding that political criminals be tried in military courts
etc.

"Lincoln the Tyrant" isn't just a baseless accusation from psuedo-racist southern sympathizers. The guy's presidency was seriously flawed with some questionable actions, and any honest biographies, regardless of medium, should touch on those... so it will be interesting to see if Spielbergo addresses them straight-forwardly, handles it with kid-gloves, or leaves it alone all together.

it is pretty normal to judge a film as boring based on one shot of the main character, right?

Ah. I've read that one, actually. Good, though as the title implies, it also spent a lot of time on the team Lincoln assembled around him, rather than just Lincoln himself.

Team of Rivals didn't completely ignore those if I remember (though I don't recall anything about limiting freedom of speech) but it certainly didn't spend a whole lot of time there either. So I wouldn't expect to see much in the film, either.

@Axl - given today's political climate, I bet they wont get into those aspects of his presidency, as people will take it as commentary on whats currently going on.

I expect this to be much like "There Will Be Blood" - a really good, really long, sometimes drawn out character study.

lol are you serious? this is absolutely either the best troll post in history or just someone who has no understanding of US history

it's not like he took office and decided "I'm gonna kill as many people as possible". please explain the military brutality? torture? are you referencing the suspension of habeas corpus? also you realize the emancipation proclamation came nowhere near the end of the war and the end result had nothing to do with freeing slaves

please explain your position with actual facts rather than hyperbole. I would LOVE to hear this

yea. i hate lincoln. and not for anything to do with slavery. i think he was just a fucking yokel. he was bad at choosing staff. and he completely neglected the people he was supposed to represent. definitely not a preZ I would want in office when aliens visit Earth.

once again, please feel free to explain. staff? if you wanna talk generals thats one thing, he wasnt a military man but he read a lot on it and tried. just like any person sometimes its a learning process. neglecting the people he represented? republicans at this point in time were an ultra liberal party and lincoln had always been a moderate. thats why it took a ridiculous amount of elections to even just vote him in at the convention.

I'll give jc the fact that he did not choose the best cabinet for himself. Nearly each member of his cabinet, at one point in time, discussed ways best to get him out of office.

His worst choice of military staff however, was McClellan. An egotistical know-it-all who couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag.

Taft? Seriously? He wasn't awful, but he didn't do a whole heck of a lot either. Rode into office on TR's coattails and, other than some useful commerce/trustbusting work, basically kept the chair warm.

taft is my fav because he did far more busting than teddy. Not just useful, but delayed the plutocracy 100 years

. Argentina didn't delay it and look at them now. Brazil too. Those countries were just as modern and had just as much resources and connections in the old world for investment and expertise as USA around 1800. by 1900, corruption, magical thinking (religion), and government by the rich and powerful had set in and become part of the culture to the point where a good man is considered a dangerous revolutionary and gets murdered and/or ostracized.

We on the other hand flipped entire industries on their heads only for the ideals of fairness , transparency, and efficiency. now we can't even get rid of the fucking penny.

America no longer exists. evidence is the evangelicals, the cancellation of the Super Conducting Super Collider, the financial crisis, the prison system, the recent wars, and the military budget. It's not going to collapse or anything. it's going to plod along and do nothing good ever again.

The next big revolution is going to be the right of people to peacefully and fairly migrate around the marble in response to climate change.

I like Eisenhower because he beat the Soviets peacefully. something we could have done to the Nazis as well, btw. I like ike for learning a lesson the first time.

I like Wilson for advancing world diplomacy and trust.

while mcclellan was a giant pussy who was constantly afraid of how big the confederate army seemed to him, he without a doubt built the union army. he drilled a bunch of yeomen until their legs collapsed and they loved him still. he turned what was a militia of several thousand into an actual army of hundreds of thousands. without him, there was no war. but yes, he was a giant pussy on the battlefield

Only critique I have, and it really isn't founded in anything other than my imagination, is that DDL's voice isn't as commanding as I'd thought it would be. I always heard in my head a big booming voice from Lincoln.
