Quote :
"New York (CNN) -- As many as five people were shot Friday in front of the Empire State Building in New York, a spokesman for the New York Fire Department said.

Authorities converged on the building around 9 a.m. after reports of gunfire.

Additional details were not immediately available."

Maybe we should just start a thread for mass shootings.

New York is the safest big city in the country. Gun control is very strict here but you can still buy a gun in any other state and bring it in.

Stop being stupid.

So gun control in NYC works then, right?

I mean, you can apply that argument in a lot of ways and it still doesn't justify NYC type gun control.

It's as faulty a premise as more guns will stop things like this.

But really the violent crime reduction is thanks to many things, including much more efficient use of police force.

You can have a gun in new York city but it is difficult and takes some time.

If you don't go through the proper avenues expect to spend a minimum of 3 years in jail. A shooting like this doesn't justify making it easier to get a gun here.

dentaldamn you're an idiot.

gun control only works as a political tool to appease pussies.
it makes them feel safe... criminals don't mind having illegal guns...
fucking moron.

for my entire opinion see my letter below.

Quote :
"I just sent a message off to some lowly person near the bottom of obama's cabinet to let them know my position.

I know obama is planning on renewing the assault weapons ban, which i personally think is ignorant if done incorrectly. If you plan on going through with more "gun control" laws these are some items that need to be addressed.

1: Simply banning assault weapons as defined in the same manner as previously stated does nothing to help the situation. All it does is remove these guns from their legal uses in shooting sports such as 3-gun. Criminals will still get illegal weapons to commit their crimes with. I mean, who cares about a weapons charge when murder or armed robbery is on the list of charges?

2. Crazy people that snap and just want to kill a bunch of people will just resort back to IEDs as they always have. They're simple to make and are much more affective at killing people and impossible to regulate because they can be made from almost anything. Keep in mind that IEDs are also more difficult to trace and don't jam preventing them from killing any more people.

3. Don't take this the wrong way, i'm not completely against gun control. I would be ok with more in-depth background checks etc. I think that these weapons should fall under the same plan that a conceal and carry permit does. Make people have to take a class on weapons safety where their mental health can simultaneously be judged along with their care and responsibility with a firearm, then apply for a permit to purchase one in which a background check will be completed... then finally allow the purchase of the fire-arm once mental health has been assessed to the best of our ability. This would not only prevent "crazy people" from getting assault weapons but may be able to "catch" someone who isn't mentally stable trying to purchase fire-arms.

This system would be a win-win. You wouldn't upset the entire demographic of gun owners by making a blanket rule that prevents well-meaning sporting individuals from owning assault weapons. And you would make it significantly more difficult to obtain them as well as get a chance to teach gun-safety to those who are obtaining them and are well-meaning individuals that just haven'te been trained on fire-arm safety."

What are these words worth? You're just pulling this shit out of your ass, it doesn't mean anything. Even as a general opinion, is there any reason anyone should listen to you? Considering you'd say something like "political tool to appease pussies," I just don't see your "argument" being worth the time it took for you to type it. How do you know whether criminals mind having illegal guns? Which criminals are you talking about? "it makes them feel safe..." Really? What a load of nonsense.

Thats fine if you think I'm an idiot. That isn't going to make gun laws change in new York.

I heard gun shots outside my apartment last night. No idea what happened and it's not on the news. When only criminals have guns it's easier to round up all the idiots and put them in prison.

But you don't have to visit if you don't like it.

I'm just messing with you...

if you read what i posted below it you'll find i'm just against blanket bans on weapons.

To be honest IMHO is no place for guns in NYC the entire purpose there outside of rental ranges would be to kill a human being... as there are no other safe places to shoot recreationally.

Also there is a huge police force here. Chances are if you pull a gun there will be a cop either on or off duty with a gun on them. There is no point to have civilians pulling guns to "protect" themselves. More people die that way.

With that being said the cops in NYC have been rapping people at an alarming rate. So that sucks.

Haha, pointing to the NYPD as a model police force and saying that private citizens have nothing to worry about because the government will be their personal protection is funny and ironic. ^And tell that the thousands of rape, murder, and assault victims in NY each year.

The points are: 1) the government is not a personal protection force and 2) NYPD has way too many issues to cite as a good resource for personal protection.

Well, that's arguable depending on what metrics you look at and how you define "big city". And I said nothing about comparing statistics. I said a lot. I didn't say the most, more than 'x', etc. And there are still even smaller cities in strict gun control areas with even higher crimes rates. A lot of crime is a lot of crime. Sure, there are worse areas, I never refuted that.

It's amazing. The person you would call a "gun nut" never resorts to statements such as shooting, maiming, raping, raping the first child of, etc. of someone he disagrees with. But you, you bring that out first!

As someone who grew up around NYC at its worst in the 80s and firsthand saw the amazing renaissance over time I'm thankful for the NYPD and the city's polices in general, faults and all.

It's really amazing how nice and safe it is for a city its size in this country.

WOOOOOW

SO the cops probably accidentally shot some of the victims!

Imagine if there were gun-wielding citizens who tried to stop the commotion too! How much confusion there would be and how many MORE injuries and lives lost. It would have been an all out shooting-festival in the middle of New York!
