Trying to entertain my youngster and his nephew over the holiday weekend.

The top of my list is Houseguest...one of the best films ever too!

Any recommendations would be much appreciated!!!!!!!

Groundhog Day
A League of Their Own

Edit: Mighty Ducks, Rookie of the Year, Mr. Nanny as one of those so bad it's good movies

[Edited on August 30, 2012 at 6:11 PM. Reason : didn't read the OP, thus didn't know purpose was to entertain youngsters.]

Some of these might be G, but whatevs.

The Iron Giant
Labyrinth
What About Bob?
Heavyweights
Raiders of the Lost Ark

I enjoy the fact that Groundhog Day is PG. Between the rampant self-loathing and the multiple suicide attempts, it's family fare of the highest order! (Note: I consider this one of the finest films of all time, but still).

Star wars, back to the future, Indiana jones

But Pg movies made before pg13 existed are cheating IMO. Raiders would have likely been 13.

For kid movies, definitely the goonies and the sandlot. Hook, surf ninjas, Willow, narnia (the first one), National treasure, the incredibles, and any and all Ernest movies.

This would be easier with a more specific age range, but (and some of these may be G):

To Kill a Mockingbird
The Muppet Movie
TRON
A Shot in the Dark, The Pink Panther, etc.
E.T.
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (the Kirk Douglas / James Mason version)

This was my favorite movie when I was a kid. Haven't watched it since, so who knows if it will stand the test of time.

Disorderlies because it snuck in some nudity. I was more than impressed as a child. Oh, and it was hilarious.

^^ To be fair, we have no idea how old these children are. Also, What About Bob? is way more kid-appropriate/lower concept than Groundhog Day.

i'll agree about the age thing

but i watched both what about bob and groundhog day about a year apart, as a 12 year old (give or take) and groundhog day was funny as shit, what about bob was like, what?

i disagree about lower concept though...i think reliving the same day over and over again is more understandable by a kid than a movie about a mental patient

The first film that came to mind was Ma Vie en Rose, a heartwarming story about a child's journey of self-discovery and overcoming parental resistance...

...but then I learned it was rated R

Dafuq? I call bigotry

Anyway, consider Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or The Nightmare Before Christmas, the Tim Burton trifecta of demented children's stories.

also TIL that over half of all rated films in America are rated R, well over half the rest are PG-13, the vast majority of the rest are PG, and almost all films remaining are G, with no more than 4 NC-17 films in any year since 1993, and some years in the new millennium having no NC-17 releases

Definitely Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom, but as some one said those movies are cheating as they definitely would have been PG-13 nowadays. Jaws is also rated PG haha. Legit PG movies I would say:

E.T.
Napoleon Dynamite
The Princess Bride
The Goonies

And I love Hoosiers and Apollo 13 as well, but those aren't exactly 'kids' movies.

Forrest Gump

I watched it many times as a kid, and as I got older and kept watching, I'd see the real meaning of things. Same for the historical stuff in the movie. Its hilarious to kids

Also, I found this site, and it's pretty cool. It has got lots of newer stuff but also older movies and smarter/more arty stuff for kids. You can search by age, genre, topic, etc...

I'll echo The Wizard. I found out in college that movie was about a kid with autism... and apparently kids with autism are born with the knowledge of the whistles in Mario 3.

Nightmare Before Christmas is an obvious one. Really any Tim Burton film might as well be a Halloween-themed movie
