the texas/north dakota thing got me thinking: how hard would it be (if it's even possible) to get a phone number that the cia could not trace back to you?

clearly you're going to want to do a cash prepaid thing to start. from there you could create any number of rube goldberg-esque procedures for getting a phone number (e.g. use the data service to create a google account and get a number through google talk), but i have to assume that no matter how many silly things you throw in there it'll ultimately be pretty easy to trace back to the prepaid phone, so you might as well just get a prepaid phone.

someone who knows more than i on this subject, please enlighten me.

you know they located a serial killer one time who was using cell phones that were not even connected to call 911, (you can call 911 even if there is no acct attached to the device). They use a thing called triangulation to locate a perimiter for the phone, 3 cell towers make a triangle, the cell phone will go between the closest tower.

The 911 call you could hear a train passing by, they located the train that passed by a cul de sac at that exact time of day, located a house that had a guy with a record living in it, arrested him after gathering some more evidence and DNA match.

he was fucked, all because he thought he was calling from an untraceable phone.
