Anyone else getting it this week? I played torchlight 1 a little bit and am really looking forward to the multiplayer aspect in this one. I'm pretty much over d3 and hope this one does well.

I skipped D3 entirely in anticipation of this being the spiritual sequel to the Diablo series. I'll still wait for some reviews since TL1 got really boring really quickly.

I'll be playing this as soon as I'm done with Borderlands 2's main storyline.

But in the "different design philosophy from Diablo 3" department, here's my friend's comment: "They're definitely of the notion that the things that make gear interesting should not be limited to higher-level gear. At lvl 9, i've already got like 15 sockets on my equipped gear, i've had 2 rare items with weird stats on them, and i've had pieces of 3 different sets."

Just the way the characters feel when you control them. Noone comes close to the polish blizzard puts on responsiveness and player feedback in this regard. You FEEL like you're hitting shit in D3, and you know when you miss. You feel like you are in complete control of your character and everything is very smooth.

In TL2 I cant tell if I hit or miss mobs a lot of the time. The readability on the screen isnt as good either so when it gets hectic I can sometimes lose where enemies are or even where my character is. This doesn't happen in D3.

I am not bashing TL2; its quite fun and ive already spent more time with it than I did the first one. I just am waiting for a company to hit the blizzard levels of polish on player feedback and controls.

I like the feel of the controls, movement, and combat more than D3 tbh. There is less of a tactile feel because it seems like they streamlined the experience to me. Everything from movement to attacking is just faster and I like it. There is 0 input lag when you want to do an action.

Oh well I'm using the hawk pet and it generally stands out, but that starting area does have a ton of wolves, so I can see where your coming from if you were using the wolf pet.

mage class... I think so far best class for my playing style. As long someone else keep aggro, I'm safe at DPS from a far. I just wished your pet held aggro better when solo.

From what I read you can respec your last three skill assignments. Stats are permanent.

I guess the idea is that you only assign 3 skills at a time, test them out, and make sure you want to keep them before making more assignments.

^^ or D2, since you can do a full respec in that game.

You're a terrible troll.

This would make sense if skills worked that way, but there are multiple tiers to the skills, coming 5 points apart.

since when were there respecs in d2? must have been a recent patch because in my d2 days there was no respec at all, not even 3 skill points.

The idea is to design your character and own it. So many people rely on cookie cutter specs, and regret and/or can't make decisions with their skill points. If you want to try another spec, then roll another character, the playstyle is different so its like a new class and adds longevity to the game.

I believe they added a once per difficulty respec option for Diablo 2 a few years ago. I stopped playing vanilla D2 before they added respec so I'm not sure exactly when it came along. Once per difficulty isn't a terrible option. You can have fun with the useless skills and then respec to a more viable build when starting a new difficulty.

I more or less agree with you. Rerolling another character from the beginning isn't that big of a negative if the game is fun enough. With my play style unlimited respecing would nerf the game's longevity. I'd just try a skill for 10 minutes, move on to the next one for 10 minutes, test out all the skills, and be essentially done with the game in a few hours time. If I start over from the beginning I get to see how a particular build evolves over time as opposed to a respec where I suddenly have 60 skills to spend and just immediately max out a skill from the onset.

Different strokes...

I don't know how it is for TL2, but with TL1 they had it fairly balanced to where I never felt like I was wasting a skill point. Then again I got bored with TL1 very quickly so I probably never saw how the various skills fared in higher difficulties.

I think patch 1.12 introduced respec to D2. You get 3 per character, upon completion of the Den of Evil in each difficulty.

got the game, but haven't given it much time due to poor timing of release (2 days after borderlands and enough time to beat the aRPG genre into the ground with diablo 3)

but played a bit to get the feel of the game, looks like a fun one to keep on the shelf though

"From Patch 1.13, Diablo 2 players can now respec; there are two ways to perform a respecialization.

The first such way is to complete the Den of Evil quest, granting one respec per difficulty completed in 1.13. If this quest is completed before 1.13, one free respec will be given to players on Hell difficulty.

The second way to get a respec is to obtain the four essences as random drops from the Act Bosses.

Twisted Essence of Suffering from Andariel or Duriel
Charged Essence of Hatred from Mephisto
Burning Essence of Terror from Diablo
Festering Essenece of Destruction from Baal

Combining this four objects in a Horadric Cube will create a Token of Absolution, granting the desired respec. "

http://diablo2.diablowiki.net/Respecialization

Seems pretty straightforward. Forcing rerolls just to attempt new builds as a way to increase longevity is an antiquated and lazy way to design a game imo. There are plenty of ways to keep the game interesting besides forcing players to start a character from scratch.

I don't think it needs to be something you can do at a whim, and it should be expensive and require a time investment to get; but you need to still be able to be progressing your character while you work towards it instead of throwing the character away.

^ i somewhat agree. i have a build that i want to try out (for my support cannon engineer), but sometimes you can't foresee what numbers on the screen actually correlate to.

-is it fun later on?
-will it do enough damage to deal with the mobs im gonig to face?

In those cases, it really sucks to gimp yourself, even if you are not the min/max kind of player.

For me, I'm building the heal bot up a little bit and then going for a cannon build that uses the speed/stun passive + the extra lightning dmg to stunned guys + bonus lightning dmg. that's a lot of passive, but it seems like a nice mix of ranged dmg and then i'll just supplement it with various robots. could that build be really boring? quite possibly. might robots be worthless like pets are in various other games? quite possibly. guess we'll see.

I downloaded the demo of this today and thought it was pretty fun. As for the respec thing, I get the feeling that the developers wanted to make this a casual kind of game, where having a general idea of what you're going for is important but you don't need to go to a bloody character builder to figure out every detail just to play.

So far the only issue, and it's not too bad so far, is that when I click to run away sometimes I just shoot my gun like a fool instead of running. Since movement and fire are dictated by the same primary click.

It's fun, I'd say it's as fun as D3 so far but I have only played a few hours.

However D3 has more visual appeal because of the destructable environments. It's a minor thing but it really helps the atmosphere that almost everything that is not the ground or a building can be smashed.

Blizzard has 100,000 times the money and its been in development on and off for the past 12 years. TL2 is made by a handful of developers compared to D3 so its understandable that they kept the graphics very tame; plus its nice to be able to play a fun, casual, button masher game like this on a not-so-stout computer so everyone could play it. Offline or on.

For what it is, its a decent indy game that only costs $20 to play. I don't think many people would have followed suit if they asked $60.

I just laugh everytime I play a diablo style game because of the fact that I played D1 and D2 on my old gaming rig back then on a 90lb 22" CRT apple cinema display at the stock 640x480 resolution.

Is there additional space in the shared stash that I'm not seeing? It seems laughably small. Like if you were out to get all items in a set you'd probably only have room for a few sets plus a few random items.

I liked the D2 mods' shared stash that had pages. As currently implemented I'll probably have to create a dozen mule characters just to store stuff.

honestly, most of the set items seem rather lackluster to warrant the idea of saving them to get the benefits for them. By the time you do collect them and give them to a character that can use them for the few levels that warrant their need, you'd find a rare or legendary item that's way more OP with similar requirements.

I really only save legendary items, good or bad. Atleast you can transmute 4 bad legendary items into a new legendary item.

Yeah, I guess you're right. Most set items I've found aren't that good and the bonuses aren't anything to gawk at either.
